From a BA chat today:

Q: Seth from Oxford, Miss. asks:

What do you think about the fast starts of two former Rebels, Mark Holliman and Matt Maloney in AA? Holliman especially is tearing it up (5-0, 0.44) for Tennessee, so how long do you think it will be until he reaches Wrigley?

A: Chris Kline: No Stephen Head? Holliman has been much more consistent than Maloney at this point, but then again, Holliman's been more consistent than a lot of guys. I think he's at least a year away, but if they need him, I think he's a guy who could step in and give you a chance to win. The curveball has shown signs of being plus this season, and his changeup gives him an effective weapon against lefties and righthanded hitters.

Looking at some of the Tennessee numbers, who is this Mark Holliman kid?

2005 3rd round draft pick from Ole Miss. Upper 80s to (hopefully) low-90s fastball, good curve, ok change.

IowaCubs.com"]Crazy Eights - Iowa wins eighth straight

Fontenot hits safely in his eighth straight game

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs topped the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3 Friday night at Principal Park to sweep the four-game series.

The Cubs used solo home runs by Mike Fontenot and Eric Patterson and a pair of RBI singles by Buck Coats to win their eighth straight game and make a winner out of starter Carlos Marmol, who worked 6.2 innings and improved to 4-1 on the year. Clay Rapada picked up his fourth save of the year. Fontenot's homer extended his hitting streak to eight games.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies Blank Biscuits 3-0 Friday Night

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Sean Gallagher combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout, helping the Tennessee Smokies (17-16) defeat the Montgomery Biscuits (18-17), 3-0, in the finale of the five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium.

Gallagher (8-0) limited Montgomery to just four hits in seven innings, striking out eight in the process. Reliever Billy Petrick hurled a scoreless eighth inning and closer Geoffrey Jones earned his fourth save in as many opportunities with a scoreless ninth.

Montgomery starter Jon Barratt (0-1) allowed hits to the first three batters he faced in the game, the last a Jake Fox RBI double that put the Smokies on the scoreboard. Barratt then walked Matt Craig to load the bases with none out, but retired the side on a fly out and a double play ground ball to escape the frame without any more damage. That was all the offense that Tennessee would get off of the Biscuits southpaw, who gave up only one more hit and no more runs during the next five innings.

Tennessee pushed a run across in the seventh against Evan Meek to widen its lead to 2-0. A Cookie Rojas suicide squeeze in the ninth off of Richard De Los Santos delivered the game's final run.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Drop a Heartbreaker in Extra Innings

It Took 17 Innings for Lakeland to get the Edge on Daytona

Jeanine Jiannetti

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Every active position player on the Cubs (19-15) roster had a chance to see some action tonight as Daytona losses a heartbreaker in 17 innings to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (13-22), 6-5.

Daytona had 19 hits from nine of the 12 batters who stepped up to the plate. Tyler Colvin (4-7) and Nate Spears (4-7) both contributed four hits on the night. Colvin had a double while Robinson Chirinos (2-8) and Kyle Reynolds (2-4) each had triples.

Spears, Colvin (2), Jesus Valdez (2-7), and Alberto Garcia (2-8) each had RBI that supplied the Cubs with five runs. However, Daytona was not able to put a runner across the plate from the fifth inning through the duration of the game.

Jesse Estrada made the start and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits, with one walk, and four strike outs. The Cubs had six other pitchers take the mound including a position player, Alberto Garcia (L, 0-1). Garcia, who had been the designated hitter all game, came in to finish out the 17th inning to received the loss in his first turn on the hill.

The bullpen came in and did the job that they have done for the Cubs all season, closed out. No runs were allowed on 10 hits in 12 and two-thirds innings. Darin Downs, Mike Phelps, Jerry Blevins, Grant Johnson, and Matt Avery combined for 14 strikeouts.

Gotta love the whole commit four errors but hit the GW 3-run HR.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Johnston Homers Chiefs to Series Win

Dayton, OH – Dylan Johnston atoned for four fielding errors with one big swing and a three-run 9th inning homer to give the Peoria Chiefs a 10-9 win over the Dayton Dragons Friday night. The homer, the first of his professional career, capped a five run comeback and gave the Chiefs the only series win against the Dragons in 2007.

The Chiefs fought back in the ninth against Rojas. Wellington Castillo led off with a single and Blake Lalli followed with a double down the first base line to put two in scoring position. Camp reached on an infield single scoring Castillo for a 9-7 game as Jonathon Mota pinch ran for Lalli. Dylan Johnston atoned for four errors by blasting his first career homer, a three-run shot down the right field line and onto the street for a 10-9 Chiefs lead.

A disastrous first inning for the Chiefs staked the Dragons to an early 3-0 lead. Drew Stubbs led off by roping a double down the left field line. Peoria starter Jose Pina struck out Justin Turner before Chris Valaika reached on an infield single. Pina then hit Juan Francisco to load the bases with one out. Denis Phipps hit a tailor made double play to get Peoria out of the inning unscathed. But shortstop Dylan Johnston threw the ball away into right field allowing two runs to score. Logan Parker followed with a RBI single to give Dayton a 3-0 lead. Another error by Johnston on a potential inning-ending double play ball prolonged the inning before Pina escaped down three.

In the second, Pina was again let down by his defense. With one out and runners on first and second, Parker hit a double play grounder to second. Matt Camp threw to Johnston for the first out, but Johnston ’s throw to first was way off target to keep the inning alive. Gerardo Cabrera capitalized with a two-run double to left for a 5-0 Dragons lead.

Peoria got on the board and knocked starter Sean Watson from the game in the sixth. With one out, Johnston singled to left and went to third on a double by Alfred Joseph. Yusuf Carter battled to a full count before launching a line drive homer into the concession stand line in left. The blast was Carter’s third home of the season and cut the Dayton lead to 5-3.

Dayton scored three in the seventh on two walks, a hit batter and an error to take an 8-3 lead. Peoria came charging back in the top of the eighth against reliever Misael DeJesus. Matt Camp led off with a bunt single and stole two bases while Dylan Johnston walked. Alfred Joseph reached on a fielders choice before Carter doubled home Camp. Dayton brought on closer Jose Rojas and Josh Lansford greeted him with a sac fly to center. Russ Canzler brought the Chiefs to within two at 8-6 with a RBI single to left. Jim Adduci lifted a deep flyball to right center but Phipps ran it down to end the inning.

Dayton added an insurance run in the eighth on two more errors in the inning by Johnston at shortstop. The second error was on a throw home allowing Stubbs to score after Turner grounded to short.

Pina went five innings allowing four earned runs on five hits. He walked one, hit two and struck out three. Oscar Bernard allowed two earned runs without giving up a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Jayson Ruhlman allowed just an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Rocky Roquet picked up his eighth save of the year and second of the series by striking out two in a one-hit ninth inning.

Gorman’s Pub Players of the game: Yusuf Carter (CF) & Dylan Johnston (SS)– The red hot outfielder homered in the sixth and doubled home a run in the eighth. He finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four driven in. He now leads the team in RBI with 17 and is tied for the team lead in homers with 3. Johnston gave the Chiefs their first and only lead of the game with a 3-run homer to right in the 9th. He finished 2-for-4 with a walk, 3 RBI and two runs scored.

Notes… Yusuf Carter extended his hit streak to nine games with his sixth inning homer…Carter is 14-for-34 on the eight game road trip…Dayton had not lost a series all season…The Chiefs have nine hits or more in six straight games…The six errors are a season high for the Chiefs as are the four errors by one player…

Montgomery Advertiser"]Pitching smokes Biscuits again

By A. Stacy Long

The back end of the Tennessee Smokies' starting rotation really isn't the back end at all.

Sean Gallagher stuffed the Montgomery Biscuits in the final game of a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium on Friday.

Gallagher allowed four measly hits over seven innings in the Smokies' 3-0 victory and marked Tennessee's third straight nice start in Montgomery.

"He pretty much controlled the plate," Biscuits manager Billy Gardner said. "That probably ranks up there as one of the better starts all year against us."

Gallagher (4-2) was only following a precedent set by Mark Holliman and Donnie Veal.

Holliman threw eight shutout innings to win Wednesday, while Veal had a quality start Thursday before the Biscuits mounted a late winning rally.

That's two runs in three games for the Biscuits against the Smokies' last three starters -- in game order only. A missed start and a few rainouts backloaded Tennessee's rotation.

Holliman is 5-0 with an 0.44 ERA, while Veal and Gallagher rank among the Chicago Cubs' top five prospects.

"Those three, four and fives are my one, two and threes," Smokies manager Pat Listach said. "It just ended up that way."

Gallagher, who walked four and struck out eight, combined with two relievers on a six-hitter. Geoffrey Jones worked the ninth for his fourth save.

"Gallagher is going to give his team a chance to win every fifth day," Listach said. "He's our No. 1. Even with Holliman and his numbers, Gallagher has No. 1 stuff. That's no knock on Holliman."

Des Moines Register"]"I have a hard time believing that anyone in the Pacific Coast League's had a better week than Font," manager Buddy Bailey said, "but the great thing about this is that he's just one of a lot of guys contributing to this streak."
