Daytona loses 4-3. The D-Cubs only had 3 hits compared to St. Lucie's 12. Harvey's HR and Valdez's double and single were the only hits that they could muster. Colvin was 0/4 with a strikeout.

Peoria now up 2-0 as they head to the 9th.

Matt Craig hit a solo homer to put Tennessee up 3-2. Berg's line through 4: 4 innings, 1 hit, 2 runs, 1 earned, 2 K's/3 BB's.

Peoria wins 2-0. Dolis gets the W. Maestri and Roquet combine for 3 and 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

Tennessee up 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th. Ex-Cub farmhand Carlos Vasquez has thrown 3 innings of 1 hit ball and has struck out 5 in relief against his old organization. Berg has had a real solid start...only 1 hit in 7 innings.

Dolis with a decent outing. 5.2 scoreless with 3 hits, 4 BBs, and 4 Ks. Peoria's currently up 1-0.

Gotta improve that control. Granted, he's nowhere near as bad as he was last season at Mesa, but still.

Wow, Justin Berg with 7 innings and gave up 1 ER. After giving up 15 ER in 12 innings before today. Tennessee just took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th.

And Tennessee wins 4-3 :D

Another AZ Phil report from Mesa:

http://mvn.com/milb-cubs/2007/05/02/update-from-arizona-phil-2/#more-92

2005 #1 draft pick LHP Mark Pawelek was the starting pitcher for the Cubs, and went two innings (31 pitches). It was a Tale of Two Innings for Mark, as he struggled with his command in the first inning (23 pitches, including walking the first two batters), followed by an easy 1-2-3 eight-pitch second inning.

18-year Venezuelan RHP Robert Hernandez continued his fine EXST, going three innings, and striking out six. He is as polished as an 18-year old pitcher I’ve ever seen.

Sammy Baez continues to learn the finer points of CF, losing one fly ball in the sun, and then making a spectacular shoe-string catch on a low liner. At least he seems to be enjoying himself.

Apparently AZ Phil also made a post about yesterday's action at Fitch:

http://mvn.com/milb-cubs/2007/05/01/update-from-arizona-phil/#more-85

After throwing his first “live” BP sessions last week, LHP Chris Shaver got some game action in today’s contest, posting an easy 1-2-3 8th inning (F-9, F-8, and K-called), and looking sharp in the process. (Shaver was a rotation starter last year at AA, but started the 2007 season at EXST while rehabbing from post-2006 season shoulder surgery).

And 18-year old Dominican RHP Alberto Cabrera continued his outstanding EXST with an electrifying performance, throwing 2.1 IP of no hit/no run ball, walking one while striking out four, with a GIDP erasing the walk. No question Cabrera has the best pure stuff of any pitcher at Fitch, mixing a plus-fastball with a nasty breaking ball. He should be the ace of the AZL Mesa Cubs staff come June.

In the field, Sammy Baez’s move to CF appears permanent (at least until further notice). He made a nice running catch today, and really knows how to take charge, as he almost ran over right-fielder Andres Quezada to catch another pop up. He also displays a plus-arm from CF. Fact is, Sammy B. has just plain outgrown SS.

I take it this Hernandez kid is someone we should keep our eye on.

Certainly, he had a good season at Mesa last summer. Good FB, great control. Only 18-years old...he better be in Boise this June. I'm loving what I'm reading about Alberto Cabrera too, especially given his size and stats from the DSL last season (I know craig is a big fan of Cabrera's too).

I would think Robert Hernandez will go to Boise, but he’s only 18, so you never know. He throws his curve consistently for strikes (VERY unusual for pitchers at EXST), and has a plus fastball and a change that he throws to left-handed hitters. A very polished pitcher.

Alberto Cabrera throws even harder, but he’s not quite as consistent with his breaking ball. But Hernandez and Cabera are 1-A and 1-B as far as the pitchers at Cubs EXST. The only thing holding them back is both are only 18, and the Cubs probably don’t want to rush them.

I'm driver on both these bandwagons.

Tennessee: Smokies Take out Barons 4-3 in 11 innings

I'll take up shotgun if no one else has.
