So what do you guys think Wood will become in the majors? I know what his ceiling is, but what do you realistically expect of him?

An above average defensive 3B (average defensive SS).

Once he gets past the ML learning curve, I expect a .300/.365/.550/.915 line fairly regularly with about 20-25 SB per year (~80% success rate). This kid is going to mash.

He strikes out way too much to carry that kind of average.

Whut.

Would you have said Derrek Lee wouldn't have been able to carry a .300+ BA just by looking at his minor league SO numbers?

His strikeouts will go down. I don't expect him to K 150+ times a year except for maybe the first couple of seasons.

He wont be an average defensive SS if he sticks there. That's for sure.

BA disagrees with you.

Whether or not he'll remain at shortstop is predicated on the Angels' needs, but he's a solid defender capable of playing shortstop everyday in the big leagues. His range is average, his hands are soft and his arm is a plus. He's adept at making accurate throws on the run and shows proper footwork turning double plays.

Thats a pretty damn big assumption.

Not really. He has a couple problems that could dramatically reduce the number of strikeouts he racks up if fixed.

Wood could reduce his empty swings by fine-tuning his approach. He occasionally tries to do too much with pitcher's pitches, when letting them go by or simply putting them in play would be more effective. Like many young power hitters, Wood will chase balls above his hands and occasionally pulls off pitches on the outer half. When behind in the count, he could shorten his swing.

Funny, you can say the same thing about Ryan Harvey's and Corey Patterson's strike outs.

His range is average at best, but he's instinctual and his hands are fine.

Thats below average overall. Anyways your starting SSs in the majors all grade out as above average range for the most part, remember that.

Yeah, I realize that SS usually have above average range and arm strength (referring to ML average). But a lot of them make a ton of stupid errors which really detracts from their overall value defensively. Wood won't get to as many balls as a lot of ML SS, but he doesn't make many mistakes with the balls he gets to (from what I've heard - defensive stats in the minors are next to worthless, IMO).

But anyway, Wood's offense will more than overcome his below average/average play in the field, so it's not a huge issue, IMO.

CPatt is a very bad comparison for Wood. He had hardly any time in the minors. Harvey never came close to putting up a decent BA (or OBP) in significant ABs. His skillset and eye at the plate are obviously no where near comparable to Wood's skillset.

Wood posted a minor league BA of .285 (.353 OBP) even with his loopy swing and inability to zone the plate (both of those problems are very much teachable/learnable at the ML level).

I can understand why some people aren't as high on BW as I am, but he seems like too good of an athlete with decent IsoD skills to worry about in the same manor as a Harvey/Patterson.
