Injury updates:

Knoxville News-Sentinel"]Gallagher Skipped: Sean Gallagher was scratched from his start against Mobile on Monday.

"He said he slept on his shoulder and experienced some tightness," Tennessee manager Pat Listach said. "It's just precautionary. If this was August, he would have pitched."

Gallagher (2-1, 31.2 ERA) was struck on the outside of the right wrist by a fourth-inning line drive in his last start at Chattanooga but that bruise was not related to this minor setback.

Listach says Gallagher isn't your typical 21-year-old.

"We're up 4-0 and I told him, 'Go ahead and take it in (to the dugout) and I'll let (Paul) Schappert get this W,'" Listach said after he arrived at the mound to check Gallagher's wrist.

Gallagher's reply: "No, way, no way. I'm not going anywhere."

"He pitched three more innings," Listach said. "He's a tough kid."

Injury Update: Matt Craig's leg is still sore after he was involved in a home-plate collision against Huntsville in the first homestand of the season and placed on the disabled list.

"He is still bruised and can't run," Listach said.

Third baseman Craig, who also can play first, is off to a terrific start. The switch hitter is hitting .361 with a homer and six RBIs.

Daytona News-Journal"]OF NOTE: Daytona's rotation will get a boost Wednesday night when Sean Marshall makes an injury-rehab start. Todd Blackford will skip a turn in the rotation because he's had some elbow soreness.

Peoria Journal Star"]Chiefs' third baseman Josh Lansford missed his second-consecutive game with a right knee injury. He will have an MRI done on it today.

Peoria Journal Star"]The Chicago Cubs placed Chiefs pitcher Billy Muldowney on the seven-day disabled list with a sore right elbow.

Peoria Journal Star"]The Chiefs placed starting pitcher Al Alburquerque on the seven-day disabled list with "right biceps fatigue" according to a release by the team. To replace Alburquerque on the active roster, the Chicago Cubs assigned right-handed pitcher Charlie Platt to Peoria.

I wonder how many people go to an 11:30 am AA game? Do they still serve beer at that hour?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Forget 11:30 - yesterday, Daytona had a 10:30 game (it was Education Day and the crowd was mostly school children - I want to know where my field trip to a minor league game was when I was in elementary school).

Tennessee was down 16-0 at one point before they put 7 on the board in the 6th. 16-7 Mobile in the bottom of the 7th. Berg's final line: 1 IP, 6 hits, 10 runs, 6 earned, 1 K/4 BBs. Layden gave up 5 runs, 2 earned, in 2 innings of work. Jake Fox hit a 3-run homer, his 3rd of the season. Cates also had a solo homer in the 6th.

Simokaitis pitches a scoreless 9th. Let's convert Cates and Simokaitis into pitchers, plz.

Tennessee loses 16-7.

What a whacky game.

The Altoona Curve occasionally have schoolkid's day games that start around 10:30 AM... and yes, they serve beer from the first pitch. I know from experience

LOL

I went to a game like this last year in Daytona, they handed out some kind of squeking noise maker. It was pure insanity. Gallagher pitched, I think the kids left early which was a major relief. It was nice becuase it gave me a chance to get home at a decent hour (I live on the other side of the state). I kinda wish there were more games played that early. Another nice side effect of games at that time is that they are much cooler than an afternoon game.

Daytona up 5-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Marshall has had two straight 1-2-3 innings: 6 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 4 Ks/1 BB, 1 HR allowed. Colvin is 1/2 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Valdez has a triple and Matulia has a double.

Pretty good start for Marshall. How many rehab starts is he supposed to make, and do we know where the next one will be?

Oh man, that sound makes it through the radio...felt like I was listening to a soccer game yesterday. Just so you know, I believe they said that Daytona either has 5 total Education Day games this season (there have been two so far) or 5 more this season.

Internet's finally back up and running. What did I miss over the past few days?

Veal still struggling with his control, Dopirak back from injury, Gallagher missed a start for precautionary reasons, Marshall back on the rehab trail, Alburquerque and Muldowney on the DL.

Oh, and you're really lazy.

Games during school days are awesome. The Jaxx have sections where they spray everyone with fire hoses between innings. Great times.

The only bummer is that you really have to be about the silliness of it. The theme to SpongeBob had to have been played eleventy billion times during those games. Also lots of screaming on every pop in the infield.

This was his one and only rehab start. He's headed to Iowa now.

Knoxville News Sentinel"]Listach's solution was to have a position player on the bench take the mound. Some organizations have a player designated for such emergency duty but not the Cubs.

"I went around asking who has done it before," Listach said.

To nobody's surprise Cates, who has played second, third and shortstop this season, volunteered to become the sacrificial lamb.

"I just like to be out there," he said. "Pitch, catch, whatever. I figured it was a chance to get in the game."

He'd do anything to get into a game, even tell a white lie.

"I pitched in Little League and a little bit in high school," he said. "That's about it. I warmed up a few times in professional ball when I was with the Orioles' organization but I never actually got into a game."

The 25-year-old Tampa native, who spent eight seasons in Baltimore's farm system before signing with the Cubs this season, made his way from the bullpen for the sixth.

The BayBears (10-10), who lead the Southern League in hitting and already had scored the most runs against Tennessee since the Orlando Devil Rays won 19-13 at Smokies Park in 2002, were silenced by Cates. The right-hander's line: three innings, no runs, no hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

Cates also hit his first home run of the season during a seven-run sixth against Mobile's Osbeck Castillo (1-0) that was highlighted by Jake Fox's three-run homer.

Cates was as mystified as anyone by his pitching success.

"I don't know, just luck I guess," he explained. "I just tried to hit my spots."

Cates relied on a fastball. He snapped off a few curves and mixed in a change-up or two.

"Mainly fastballs and tried to stay on the outside of the plate no matter whether the hitter was lefty or righty," he said.

The 5-foot-8 Cates looked like a mummy after the game. He met with the media with huge ice packs wrapped around his shoulder and elbow.

Although he wouldn't mind filling in again, he said there is no way he would consider becoming a pitcher full-time.

"I don't know if my arm could take that," he said with a laugh. "That was a lot of wear and tear. You have to respect those guys who pitch and the stuff they have to go through."

Daytona News-Journal"]Marshall helps Cubs top Cards

By SEAN KERNAN

Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Chicago Cubs are in need of some good news for their pitching rotation, and left-hander Sean Marshall gave the organization just that in an injury-rehabilitation start Wednesday night for the Daytona Cubs.

Marshall (1-0) went six innings, getting stronger the deeper he got into the game, and helped beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 7-2 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The bad news for Daytona is Marshall's stay here was brief, because about 10 minutes after the game he received word that he will travel to Memphis today to join the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. So the 24-year-old is one and done in the Florida State League.

"I felt pretty good. I kind of settled in there those last four innings," said Marshall, who is working his way back from a minor shoulder injury in spring training. "I got to throw some good pitches -- some cutters, sinkers, changeups -- and stretch the arm out a little bit. It was a nice start."

Nice enough that instead of making a second outing with Daytona, as was the plan, Marshall will make his next start for Iowa. He likely will settle in with the Triple-A club for several starts before getting a call up to the big leagues.

"I think it's just a matter of when I'm fully ready and they have an opening (in Chicago), because they're doing well right now," said Marshall, who spent almost all of last season in the majors. "I was about a month behind, three weeks behind everybody out of spring training, so I'm catching up."

Speculation is he could be ready to join the major-league club in mid-May. Meanwhile, Chicago has put starting pitcher Wade Miller on the disabled list and is expected to recall Angel Guzman from Iowa to take the fifth spot in the rotation.

Although the 6-foot-7, 210-pound southpaw yielded five hits and two runs in the first two innings, he settled down in his last four frames. Marshall retired the last seven batters he faced and finished with four strikeouts. He coaxed 12 groundouts as the Cards rolled over numerous cutters and sinkers.
