Just saw it on rotoworld.

Rockies released catcher Javy Lopez.

It's no surprise that Lopez failed to make the Rockies, but the early departure was unexpected. Lopez was 6-for-16 with four doubles this spring, so it wasn't about his offense. With Yorvit Torrealba proving his shoulder is healthy enough to allow him to split time with Chris Iannetta, the Rockies may have decided it was best to let Lopez find himself another team.

Did the Braves trade him at the best possible moment or what? I think Javy will probably wind up on an AL team where he can DH. I don't think he's much of a catcher anymore.

The Rockies should have signed him a couple of years ago, when they still had the other Javier Lopez. They could have had a battery of Javier Lopez and Javier Lopez.

I'm not sure he's much of a hitter anymore either.

But he had 4 doubles in spring training! [/sarcasm]

The Braves didn't trade him. They did let him go at the right time, though.

Ha, I was thinking the same thing.

They probably coud have had the Lopez the catcher hit for the pitcher without anyone noticing...

Lopez must be finished. The Rockies have hardly been set at catcher; I thought for sure he would make the team and end up becoming an offensive force again in Denver. That he didn't even make the team is a pretty strong indictment against his skill level...

On an unrelated note, my friend saw some freak crash into Torrealba's car in a parking garage at her apartment last summer!

Ianetta is pretty highly regarded as a catching prospect and is worth using as a starter right now. I'm just surprised they didn't want lopez as a backup.

Yep. Iannetta is ready.

He had better be, I'm relying on him to start for my fantasy team.
