I found this article in the Sun Times about the rapport between Piniella and Trammell.

'What I've been really impressed with Tram is that when I've asked him on the bench three, four, five times already this spring, he's given me a direct answer immediately. No waffling, 'Well ...,' riding-the-fence sort of thing. That's really what I want, because if I was exactly sure, I wouldn't be asking him.''

After reading what I have this offseason, I think we've constructed a fine coaching staff. Now, let's hope the players can get it done on the field.

I agree. I actually really like the coaching staff. I think it's going to be a wonderful change from Dusty and his minions.

I'm still reserving judgement on Rothschild until we see how the staff holds up this year. Other than that, I'm pleased with everything that I've seen thus far.

Does the trainer count as part of the coaching staff?

If not, I'm pretty happy with the early returns.

I read that Maddux told Marquis (being pretty close friends from what I understand) to pay close attention to what Rothschild has to say, and that he has much respect for Rothschild as well. Again, I really don't pin the blame of the pitching staff woes of the past few years on Larry. I blame Dusty for his perceived overrulings of Larry's opinions/decisions.

Running guys out there consistently for 100+ pitches wasn't Larry's idea. That's the manager.

That's why I'm reserving judgement

One thing that puzzles me a little though...if Dusty really did override him as much as we all think, I'm surprised he opted to stay here and work with Dusty again instead of going to Detroit. Makes you wonder if Hendry spoke to him and Rothschild knew way before anyone else that Dusty's time was about to come to an end. If I were Rothschild, there's no way I would have come back to be an assistant under him again.

I'd suspect Larry had some inside info last season on the fate of Dusty and his regime, otherwise, like you said, why would he pass up the gig in Detroit? Makes sense.

Not only that but he shunned a multi-year contract with the Tigers. He stayed b/c of his relationships with current Cubs pitchers. People may not like Larry for whatever reason, but it seems to be the consensus around baseball that he's a damned fine pitching coach.

I know theirs been some rumors about Larry not being liked by Cubs pitchers, but they're just that - rumors. Guys like Maddux, Wood, Prior, Hill, Eyre, Howry, and Clement are all on record saying how much they think of Rothschild.

When Maddux shows you love, you know you're good to go. I don't know anyone who knows more about throwing the rock as Maddux does.

That's odd because last year I heard rumors that Maddux didn't think highly of Rothschild at all

Maddux really respected Rothschild, felt he helped Greg extend his career...Clement owes his career to Rothschild. Dempster, Eyre, Howry all find him solid.

Wood has learned to listen to him, but Prior and Zambrano don't listen to him as did not the rookies, they listened to the magic opinion one who got fired.

Lots of infighting last two years....

It wasn't exactly a stunning surprise to anyone that Dusty was canned. Pretty much every sportswriter and commentator had him written off by midseason last year. There are a lot of reasons Larry could have stuck it out. Maybe he likes the city or he has family in the area. Maybe he's out to prove that the pitching problems were Dusty's and not his and salvage his reputation.

I'm with you in reserving my judgment. We'll see how the pitching staff improves this season and what changes there are in the way the staff is used. Then we can better separate Dusty from Larry.

Larry Rothschild is from the Chicago area. He still has family here although I believe he now lives in FL during the offseason.

Good info, I didn't know he was from the area. That gives a little more perspective into his decision.

That, and who would want to spend half the year in Detroit? It's not as bad as St Louis, but it's not far behind on the suck scale.
