"I believe this year I will win the Cy Young (Award) and I will enjoy that," he said. "And besides that, we will win the World Series. I guarantee you that. I have faith."

Too bad he didn't predict 120 wins this year.

Barrett is an all around great guy. From punching A.J. to this donation, Michael is just awesome. Great gesture.

Let it never be said that Carlos Zambrano lacks confidence. At least he's no longer referring to himself in the third person. This is his 2nd controversial media comment this spring, and we haven't played a week of games yet. Don't get me wrong, I love Carlos as a player, but I always find it distasteful when sports figures boast in the media.

You are aware of a phenomenon commonly referred to as a language barrier, aren't you?

Z's a talker. I just hope he's not letting his mouth write a check that his ass cant cash.

im guessing that cashing checks isnt too much a worry for Z, and provided he doesnt become injured, wont ever be

Typically I agree about boasting, but was he maybe saying this tongue-in-cheek.

No, he was completely serious. I like that he has the confidence to say it but I think tact is in order. The Cubs are going to be a target this year because of the money they spent. There's no reason to start getting too mouthy... Lou thought he should back off those comments (and actually he did back off the WS talk a bit).

Daily Herald

“I believe this year I will win the Cy Young, and I will enjoy that,” Zambrano said after giving up 1 hit and striking out four. “Beside that, we will win the World Series, I guarantee you that.”

When pressed about the World Series, Zambrano backed off a bit, saying “I’m almost sure about that.”

Cubs manager Lou Piniella was happy Zambrano toned it down on the World Series prediction.

“He should back off some,” Piniella said with a laugh.

I've always liked that Z has confidence bordering on cockiness. That's a good thing in an ace. But now I think he's getting a little too zany. He's buying into too much of his own hype.

I agree with you then. I love the confidence, but he could have stated that a lot better.

Who f'in cares?

bingo.

you people complain that we have no fire from our team, and then when they show some, you criticize them for being cocky.

Can't have it both ways boys/girls.

I guess I'm the only one that loves what he said.

you're not. i'd be worried if Z came out and said "I'm just going to try to do my best"

i'm hoping z can give us something near what he did last year. if he had been average last year, we would've had close to 105 losses.

He wasn't that FAR OFF. I mean we had how many last year? 69 wins?

If Oswalt, Sheets, Peavy and Webb all get hurt this year Zambrano has as good a shot as anyone to walk away with the CY.

Hard for me to pick someone who has control problems that actually got worse last year to win it. Maybe in 2008 if he can start to fix the problem in 2007 but I'm not seeing it for this year.

Zambrano doesn't need anybody to get hurt to have as good as shot as anyone. He has as good as shot as anyone from day 1 of the season. He has as good if not better stuff than every pitcher you listed so why does he need them to get hurt? If Zambrano cuts down on the walks just a little, there is a very good shot he walks away with the Cy Young with the offense around him this year.
