Shortstop Michael Young and the Rangers are in serious negotiations that are expected to lead to him signing a $80 million or $90 million deal with Texas by the end of spring training.

Young and the Rangers are expected to settle on one of two deals, one for $80 million over five years, or the other for $90 million over six years, SI.com has learned. People close to the situation said a couple hitches remain, but indications are still strong a deal will be worked out in coming weeks.

The new deal would start in 2009 after the current contract expires, and could go through 2013 or 2014, depending on whether they agree to the five-year deal or the six-year deal.

Dang. Young was a possible mid-season target.

Realistically, I wouldn't have wanted to trade for Young and pay him that kind of money anyway-he'll be 31 at the end of the year, and 16 per plus the players to trade for him? No thanks.

I agree. He's had a nice 3-year run, and a very good age 27 (peak) season. But he doesn't hold up in comparison with the elite SS, and is going to be coming off lower highs than others, in his 30's.

Maybe he and GM Jr went to the same drug store.

I wouldn't quite put him in that category. He peaked when you'd expect a player to peak. And his numbers have been more or less in-line with his minor league numbers.
