&(@#&*(@*()*!@~! SI

I couldn't say what I want to on a porn site. Somebody kill these guys

Seconded.

SI and ESPN have always gone out of their collective way to take shots at the Cubs.

After the Cubs win the WS, I wish there was a way they could keep SI and ESPN from covering them, basically telling SI and ESPN to go ef themselves.

Was there some ancient war between Chicago and the East Coast that I'm unaware of? I don't understand the incessant hatred of Chicago that comes from there. They certainly don't hate on other cities like St. Louis and Houston like they do us, that's for sure.

I mean look at that line: "Enjoy it while you can, Cubs fans." My God, is there any other city in sports that has to endure such a blatant, front-cover assault like that? Someone clue me in, because I've never seen anything close to that, ever, in regards to another team.

They're basically salivating over watching the Cubs fail. And after what happened with the Bears this year, Christ did we kill Giuliani or something?

Mike Fransessa and Chris Russo have a sports radio show on WFAN in NYC. Overall, the show is pretty good. These two know their stuff. However, they both hate the Cubs. Hate! And I cannot understand why?

I guess it is becuase NY is a very trendy city. They love a front runner in NY.

Hey, the Bears were on the cover of SI right before the Super Bowl and we saw how well THAT worked out. Personally, I think it's the East Coast media trying to keep the Midwest down.

So were the Colts.

Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods have been on it more than a few times, too.

Odd that you bring up Tiger. Sports Illustrated in 2002 did a cover story on its own curse and here is what they found:

Sports Illustrated[/url]"]In investigating virtually all of SI's 2,456 covers, we found 913 "jinxes" -- a demonstrable misfortune or decline in performance following a cover appearance roughly 37.2 percent of the time. One of the most fascinating things we discovered seemed to buttress Loehr's contention that the Jinx is more likely to strike athletes in fine-motor-skill sports like golf and tennis than smashmouth sports like boxing. Golfers were "jinxed" almost 70 percent of the time and tennis players after more than 50 percent of their appearances, while boxers suffered barely 16 percent of the time.

So while there is rock-solid proof that the cover curse exists, the fact that it's happened 37.2 percent of the time is something of an oddity.

No that is not "rock solid" proof of anything.

The rate is less than chance levels.

I'm pretty sure that's what he meant, just a typo.

Anyways, what would be the chance rating for this case?

I don't think it was a typo

Chance level is 50%.

It's like someone making a prediction once a week and being right 14 weeks out of 52.

Or, if someone were to bet based on the SI cover they would lose 6 bets out of 10.

Golfer's aside from Tiger rarely ever win and their performance often fluctuates from week to week.

It's an asinine theory made for people who believe in horoscopes and UFOs

Yes, it was a typo. I was merely pointing out that there is a weird correlation that happened disaster befell cover subjects more than 1/3 of the time.

I hope Lou posts that cover in the clubhouse. "Enjoy it while you can...". Might as well say "You guys suck."

EDIT:

CubInNy: Its my impression that Russo hates the Cubs b/c of 1998 and b/c we hired Baker, who he adores. Francessa is much harder to figure.

You guys are all way off. This is a pre-spring training cover. The cover jinx will come to the team that is on the cover of the actual baseball preview issue, which will come just prior to the start of the season, and will likely be the team that SI picks to win it all.

CubInNY

Mike and the Mad Dog hate the Cubs because they view them simply as a sideshow, a style over substance joke. Chris is a die-hard Giants fan, while Mike is a Yankees guy. Mike especially embodies the "the only thing that matters is winning the World Series", and he takes the standard media person's view that the Cubs can't win the World Series since the owners don't want to win the World Series. They laugh at the Cubs because they just assume there is no chance of them winning because they are the Cubs. Likewise, they (well, mostly Mike) think the Yankees will always win because they are the Yankees. They are all into that chemistry/intangibles nonsense as well.

I get annoyed only because so many of them allow it to taint their analysis of the Cubs. The aforementioned Mike and the Mad Dog show, while NY-centric, often talks about national issues. When talking about the Cubs, they seem to scoff at their chances because they are the Cubs, as opposed to because of the fact that they have a GM who refuses to acknowledge the value of the walk. It pisses me off that the Cubs curse nonsense takes precedence over the competence of the management. It almost excuses poor management decisions because they couldn't help it, since it's the Cubs.

He also went on the DL and missed out on the MVP.

I'd been with you if it had shown the whole team. 8-)

These covers just show how wrong they are with predictions. I'm glad they didn't say we were winning anythng.

Keep in mind the Lou/Soriano cover is not the baseball preview cover.

True. After this offseason its going to be hard for the Cubs to fly under the radar.

Yeah, but it's annoying. And I'm too lazy and stupid to stay away from their show.

Seems pretty clear there's an East Coast/Yankee bias in those covers. Only last year----after many, many years of Yankee failure, did they finally switch to Pujols.

It doesn't affect my love for the team. But I don't think that's the point. The point is, it's national media. Not east coast media. If you're going to be a national media outlet then you've got a responsibility to at least give every team a fair shake. That's what annoys me - we don't get fair coverage from those guys, and they CLAIM they cover the national sports scene.

There's deception in the sense that they aren't really covering the national sports scene equally. They're covering the favorite teams that they like in a positive light, and slamming those they don't like.

I don't want the Cubs on their cover. I don't believe in curses but I think it can certainly be a distraction. It would be nice if they could fly under the radar.

Yeah, I know. I laughed when I wrote it but it would still be nice. I think its annoying that local and national media are constantly telling the Cubs players they can't win.

It really irked me to read some of the questions about curses that reporters/writers were asking Lilly on his first day in camp. It's ridiculous. I'm glad that Lou is taking a positive approach and telling them to focus on the future and not any past negativity.

Ugh...remember 2004. Kerry and Mark each holding flaming baseballs? That worked out well for us.

That was at the All-Star break in 2003. This is the 2004 cover that ruined us:

*snip*

I still have that on my wall. :(

I put that as my screensaver last week. :(

Well, there goes 2007.

Oh @#$%! What a way to end the day. My issue of SI came in the mail just now. To think I wasn't going to drink because it's Ash Wednesday. Now where did I put that bottle....... :P

I especially like that right when they started putting the Yankees on the cover was exactly when the Yankees stopped winning World Series' (at least temporarily, knock on wood).
