Speaking publicly for the first time since his televised comments Monday were reported as being an ultimatum, Zambrano also said the club since has made its first formal multiyear offer — a five-year proposal ‘‘very close’’ to what the San Francisco Giants gave free agent pitcher Barry Zito this winter. That would mean an offer worth close to $90 million.

I'm going to give props to BigBadB on this one-last night on the other thread, he asked for them to come out in the papers and say that they are working on a long-term deal, and here it is :D

I'd be much happier with a 5 year contract than 7+, even if it means paying more per season.

Thanks for clearing that up, Carlos.

Agreed. Shorter deal at Zito money is acceptable. a 7, 8 year deal isn't. This still has the possibility of ending up like Wood, but IMO its a risk you have to take.

NSBB overreact?

Nooooo

Not saying its done at this point, but.. yea....

I don't think there was any overreaction at all. I think people were logically debating what should be done, but that is just me.

It is true that the Z thread was nothing like the Ramirez thread-much more toned down. There was some overreaction (like there is to just about every piece of news) but not near the level of Ramirez, and most of the conversation was discussing options as CubinNY pointed out.

Haha,I remember the Rameriz thread, it was right at the deadline, I thought some people were really going to cry or jump off a building those few days before he signed.I was freakin nervous about losing him,but it got a little crazy that time.

I think this quote clears it up.

‘‘This is the team that gave me the opportunity to play baseball since I was 16 years old. I want to stay here. ... I want to sign with the Cubs. But I just don’t want to talk about contracts during the season.’’

Oh certainly some people were just discussing it and it was no where near as bad as the Ramirez thread, but people generally acted as if he was gone for sure.

I thought Ramieriz was gone for sure. This one I'm not so sure of.

That's how he sounded at the convention too.

Hey come one now, we are suppose to make Carlos sound like an evil money grubbing a-hole right now, there's no place for that talk :D.

5 years with some mutual options would be grand.

(and I'd put money on there being a full NTC)

I'll bet there will be a couple of them to match Zito's deal. If the Cubs do make this signing Mr. Hendry will have a lot of loose ends tied up by March. I'm also wondering if this deal happens if will do something with Jones?

What would this type of deal put the Cubs 2007 payroll at?

I don't think it will do anything this year. Zambrano would still be payed out per his current contract. The extension kicks in next year. Right?
