I don't think Bernie is any more than a DH right now. I think he'd be pretty bad defensively in CF. Furthermore, if he wouldn't accept a ST invite on a minor league deal from the Yankees, I'm almost certain he wouldn't accept one from the Cubs.

The Cubs aren't in a position to offer him a spot on the roster, so I have to say no on Bernie.

During his peak years, Bernie was a great CF. He may be among the top 10 of all-time.

Sadly, he's not that player anymore.

.255 .317 .384

That's what PECOTA predicts from him offensively this year, and his CF defense would be beyond horrible.

To quote FJM - "Also, for the record: Bernie won a batting title. He was a very good hitter. Lots of years of OBP above .400. Lots of long at-bats. But his fielding was always overrated. In the four years he was awarded the Most Meaningless Award Anyone Cares About, the Gold Glove, he was a combined -11 FRAA. For his career he's -50."

I wouldn't want Bernie anywhere near the Cubs at this point (unless he wants to be hitting coach).

I think we are just fine going with Jones in RF and Sori in CF. And if Pie is tearing it up in the minors then he can get a call up mid season and replace jones in RF for just 1 half a year and trade jones for something decent. Then hopefully work it out with Sori and switch him to RF and promise him that is his spot to stay for the remainder of the contract and Pie is CF. I think they should talk to Sori about the possibility of moving to RF next year early so he knows what might in in store for him and the Cubs as they move foward. .
