The Cubs actually have a good chance of winning the hearing. The arbiter looks at the mid point and decides if the player should be paid one dollar more or one dollar less than the mid-point. Zambrano's mid point between his offer and the Cubs is still higher than Oswalt will make in the first year of his new deal. Arbitration is all about what comparable players make, and the Cubs may have a case that Zambrano and Oswalt are very comparable. If that's the case, the arbiter could easily rule in the Cubs favor.

If the Cubs win, what would that mean in terms of dollars?

I'm guessing, if vance's reasoning is correct, it would mean an Oswalt-like one year salary. According to ESPN.com, he's making 11,000,000.

Off the top of my head, the firgures are like 11.5 from the Cubs and 15 from Z.

Right, I'm a moron. Nevermind.

I think the .5 is actually opposite there-from what I remember, it was 11 from the Cubs and 15.5 from Z-that's of course off the top of my head too, so either of us could be right.

The Cubs have struck deals on the courthouse steps (so to speak) fairly recently.

I want to say that a deal was struck with Ohman minutes before his arby hearing last year, maybe the year before, but I could have the wrong player. I know they've stretched it to the deadline previously, though.

Still ticking....only about 3 hours left to get something done.

I think they can continue the hearing if the sides are close to a deal.

Cubs should tell Z they are not going to the hearing on time beacuse they are still talking.

And then show up, when Z doesn't, the Cubs are sure to win to hearing!

Or they should let Aramis run the arby hearing, he'd be late for sure. :D

Carlos wants 15.5

Cubs offered 11.025

Correct. The mid point is 13.3 (roughly). If the arbiter thinks Z should make less than the mid point, then Zambrano gets a one-year deal of 11.025. If he thinks he should make more than the mid point, he gets the 15.5.

While Oswalt signed a 5/73 contract, the break down of those dollars are 13, 13, 14, 15, and 16. The total contract is not taken into account in drawing comparisons, only what he's making in the first year of it.

So, it is likely that the arbiter will rule that Z should make below the midpoint and rule in favor of the Cubs. In fact, I think Zambrano over-reached on his amount making it very likely that the Cubs will win this.

Winning for the Cubs could mean a number of things. On the negative, it could piss off Zambrano and make negotiations more acrimonious.

On the other hand, having to pay Zambrano only 11 million would allow the Cubs a chance to bump up that amount when working out an extension which could help them in negotiations.

But does the arbitrator look at how contracts have inflated since the time they were signed?

He can, but he also can distinguish between contracts signed on the FA market and those rewarded to 6th year arbitration players.
