So if he doesn't make the team during Spring Training, he'll still have the option to play in the minor leagues?

you should edit the title to reflect what team he signed with since otherwise most will assume you mean the cubs.

With veteran players such as this, they either make the major-league team or they go home.

Hopefully I'd get to see him here in Oklahoma City, if he'd be with the Redhawks.

By the sounds of it, it's Texas or the highway.

How has Sammy done Spring Training wise in his career?

If the Rangers felt he needed a month or so to regain his timing, I could see if going on a tempoary assignment to the minors. I don't see him staying there past May 1.

Maybe. I wonder if Sammy would be ok with that? Personally, I think Sosa would struggle in the minors.

Well, back when he was good he would miss the first few days.

I don't think he'll do the prima donna thing this time around.

Well, whether he does or not will frankly send a loud message about his character.

I think he already has. He waited til late December to start training for his comeback. He's still too cocky, he thinks he can turn on the old magic with a minimal effort. In Sammy's position any humble human being would have trained his ass off all summer and played winter ball.

I thought I remember hearing really early in the offseason that he was actually working out in the DR.

Sammy Sosa begins training for return to major leagues

By DIONISIO SOLDEVILA, Associated Press Writer

December 22, 2006

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Sammy Sosa began training Thursday in hopes of returning to the major leagues.

"I feel like I did when I was a rookie," Sosa told The Associated Press. "I have a lot of spirit and a desire to return. I think I can play three or four more years in the form I am now."

Note the date. I remember when this story came out because rotoworld posted a sarcastic comment about it.

It's not like he put down a beer, pushed the bag of potato chips off of his stomach and just randomly proclaimed "I'm going to start training for baseball!". This is Sammy, i'm sure he's been "training" as in working out and such for a long time. And I'm sure he did some "training" before announcing to make sure he was still physically able to give it another try. Sammy was never one for willingly embarrasing himself.

And he never physically unprepared for a game. He's was never lazy. It's going to be interesting. I bet he has a decent shot at having a good year.

Decent shot at having a good year? What is defined as a"good" year?

He wasn't very good in 2005, and then he took a year off.

I think there is an extremely small chance he has a "good" year.

Agreed. I think his best shot of getting to 600 is showing he can still hit lefties like he did in 2005 and being platooned or being the first bat off the bench. I think there's little to no chance of him being a starter for anyone except the most hopeless of teams...so in other words, ironically, the Cubs.

The Rangers don't have a lot of RH DH/OF options, so Sammy has a decent chance of making the team. With invites to camp the Rangers have Sosa, Brad Wilkerson(L), Kenny Lofton(L), Frank Catalanotto(L), Nelson Cruz,® Marlon Byrd®, Jason Botts(SW) and Freddy Guzman ® competing for likely six roster spots. Wilkerson, Lofton, and Cat are locks to make the team. That means three spots for five guys: Cruz, Sosa, Byrd, Botts and Guzman.

Sosa has a decent shot of winning a roster spot, though the Rangers would likely be best served giving his AB's to Botts, I'm glad to see Sosa with a chance to play.

A lot of his sucess for me depends on whether Jaramillo can fix him. If Rudy can help him regain some of his patience, Sosa likely can still generate some power. Furthermore, Ameriquest Field should help him some. It's a great park for hitters.

I don't really know what to expect from Sosa, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to see Sammy hit 265/325/480 with 20-25 homeruns. That's not a great line, but it's better than what some of the Rangers other options would give them, even if I think Botts could match it.
