The article in a nutshell can be described in one sentence: A good farm system does not add up to a good team in the future.

Yep. That's it. I tried to find a really insightful sentence to quote, but one wasn't really there.

 

He did a little research and decided it takes more than a good farm system to contribute to team success. Furthermore, he added that it appears that only about 2 out of three top prospects turn out to be decent major leaguers or something like that.

I wonder if he factored in the trades that can be made with an over-hyped prospect? Or someone like Dontrell Willis who wasn't that highly rated.

 

Free agency and the Rule 5 draft have changed baseball a lot since the 1970s and 1980s. Teams like the Dodgers use to stockpile prospects while teams like the Yankees use to just buy them for cash when they were ready.
