Samardzija added to 40-man?

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but Cubs.com has added Jeff Samardzija to the 40-man roster. Did they really add him or is this just a typical Cubs.com 40-man roster screw up?

He signed a Major league contract, so they had to add him, I believe.

Correct. They were obliged to add him when they signed him to the major-league contract.

The question was raised in the thread in the Minor League forum too, and I gave basically the same response. I believe they had to give him a major league contract in order to go multi-year; I don't think you can do that with minor league contracts.
