The Score is reporting that the White Sox are very close to signing Darin Erstad, who is currently undergoing a physical. No information on contract details.

Scott Podsednik is undergoing surgery for a groin injury he suffered 4 years ago.

Fantastic news. Not only would that mean he's not going to be a Cub, but he'd actively be hurting one of our rivals.

I wonder if we have to pay him for that?

A roster with Pods AND Erstad, plus managed by Guillen?

They're going to lead the league in grit and hustle.

They'll probably set records in tenacity.

Did I mention Erstad played football? He was a punter at Nebraska.

Anything the White Sox can do to devalue/block their young players from player (ie Anderson/Sweeney/Owens) is great for the Cubs, bad for the WS fans.

And don't forget Sisco is a former DE.

If they could just trade for Eckstein, the grit and intesity on that team would be legendary.

MLB would have to void the deal. You simply can't give a team that kind of leg up on it's competition.

They could become the most look againingest team ever.

4 way tie for that award. Can't forget Joe "Best 3B in Chicago" Crede. He looks dirty. He must play hard. Not like that other 3B in Chicago. He barely jogs when he hits his home runs.

I don't mind erstad at all. If he is healthy he is a hell of a player. He just has that football mentality and goes balls out on every play and ends up getting hurt. To be honest, I wouldn't have minded him on the Cubs at all.

I just want to see somebody come in here and argue it's a good signing for the Sox.

Erstad got a lot of hits one year and used to be a great fielder.

That's all I've got.

He's got a real spiffy and unique name

Giving Ozzie Erstad is like giving Dusty Macias/Perez/Womack. Guillen loves gritty pieces of garbage, just like Baker.

Here's to 500 AB to Erstad and lots of swear words from RSF!!!

Another piece of the 2002 World Series squad has been lost as Darin Erstad signed a one-year deal with an option for 2008 to play for the White Sox.

Two sources within the Chicago organization confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Erstad agreed to terms with the club pending a physical to be conducted later in the week. A Gold Glover for the Angels at two positions, center field and first base, Erstad is projected to provide relief at both spots: as a left-handed backup to Brian Anderson in center and Paul Konerko at first.

He's a decent punter and can probably kick you a field goal in a pinch??

If he's used as a starter, it's a bad signing.

But if he's used right as a 4th/5th OF, it could wind up being an ok signing.

Erstad sucks. It amazes me that eight MLB teams were reportedly interested in him. Any non-terrible farm system ought to be able to replace his contributions.
