Elijah Dukes-OF- Devil Rays Jan. 16 - 2:59 pm et

Elijah Dukes was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession after a traffic stop in Tampa on Monday night.

Yet another reason why any team thinking of trading for Dukes should take a long look at his history. This is one of his lesser brushes with the law. Tampa police officers stopped Dukes and a passenger for a loud music violation and noted "a distinct odor of marijuana" coming from inside the vehicle. A search went on to yield less than two grams of marijuana in the center console.

What a joke, less than an 8th of pot? Who cares.

If this drops his stock enough to be a trash heap pickup, you better be on it Cubbies...

I don't want to turn this into a pot debate, but I believe the point of the article is that this kid is trouble. He has had repeated trouble following the law, and doesn't seem to be able to learn from it. It's not really the amount that was found on him, it's that he had it to begin with. Although the article doesn't mention it, who was driving and was the driver intoxicated?

I say the Cubs stay away from this moron.

The same could have been said about a lot of great players. Gary Sheffield comes to mind. He is a 22 year old who has had no father figure in his life. Sure isn't hard to figure out that he is immature.

Now that was funny.

And, obviously, he's in the wrong if he was driving while intoxicated. I just have trouble caring that a guy was playing his music too loud and got caught with a dime bag. That's the story of a lot of people who wind up becoming productive members of society. Nevermind anyone in baseball who makes a big deal out of it is a hyprocite with the steroid 90's.

If he could put up a .293/.401/.480 line for the Cubs like he did at AAA last year, frankly, he could go straight to the locker room afterwards, light a blunt, and play music so loud it disturbs the White Sox night game for all I care.

Per the update at rotoworld

After Elijah Dukes was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession during a traffic stop on Monday night, the passenger in the vehicle claimed that the marijuana found in the vehicle was his.

Still, Dukes admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day. Monday's incident was the fifth time since 2003 that Dukes has been arrested and charged with a misdemeanor. He had, however, stayed clean of late. The most recent incident prior to Monday's arrest came in September 2005 when Dukes was charged with operating an unregistered vehicle.

You can't dismiss a guy for this action. The problem was this isn't an isolated incident. Obviously he just doesn't care about avoiding trouble. I don't have problems with a person who smokes up, but if a person has been in a lot of trouble before, and can't lay off the pot while he gets back on the right road, then his problems are far greater than just liking pot.

Just because he's talented, doesn't mean he gets free ride to do anything he wants to. (ie Nash, Toe). I know the Cubs are desparately for legit talent in the system, but I rather have good characters with decent skills, over multi-talented kids, whose future is more likely in prison then a ballfield. I'd say stay away from Elijah Dukes, just like the Cubs instantly traded Josh Hamilton after picking him in the Rule V draft.

To be honest though, I'd rather find out a prospect is hitting the ganja than find out they're on amphetamines, cocaine, or drinking heavily.

Obviously he's a troubled kid, but not irredeemable. If something like this makes a team uptight and they want to dump him, it's going to be someones treasure.
