Cliff Floyd-OF-Mets Jan. 10 - 12:49 pm et

The Cubs haven't made any progress recently in talks with free agent Cliff Floyd.

The Chicago Tribune reported three weeks ago that the two sides were close to deal, but the paper has had little to say on the subject since. If the season started today, the Cubs would likely go with an outfield with Matt Murton in left, Jacque Jones in center and Alfonso Soriano in right. Trading Jones remains a possibility, but they don't seem to see Soriano as an option in center, meaning they'd have to get a stopgap back with Felix Pie still not ready.

Hell, I'm not even convinced that Floyd could pass a physical at this point to sign the contract.

I mean, Floyd only put up a .731 OPS last season, inuries nonwithstanding. In '05, Richard Hidalgo was at .705 and he could barely get a minor league deal with an invite. Floyd should have next to no market.

A million plus incentives would be perfect. He could be the 4th outfielder, and take the righties who he could excel against but Murton might have trouble with. Collect 200 to 250 at bats or so.

I can't imagine Floyd even playing in the NL at this point.

Exactly. There's no reason why the Cubs Management should even bother looking at Floyd.

Not sure if I can agree with that. We need a fourth outfielder who is capable of starting for a few weeks if a corner outfielder went on the 15 day DL. I'm of the mind that, in a worst case scenario, Murton could handle right field for a few weeks, sliding Floyd over to left. While you could say that Pie would be that insurance, if he isn't ready to be in the bigs by then anyway I'd rather not stunt his growth.

Floyd is perfect because he's literally good for a couple weeks, before he pulls something and is out for a few himself, ha.

It just depends on the contract. A million bucks is nothing to this team and Floyd would be well worth it. Even better if you could get a non guaranteed contract so we could test him out in spring, and if he's obviously done with, release him. Even a million bucks guaranteed doesn't keep us from doing that.

I thought the Cubs already signed a left handed corner 4th OF?

I just don't see the value unless he is signed for 1 +incentives and doesn't complain if he is healthy and not playing. I just don't see him getting enough AB's in the NL to keep him happy.
