I read today in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, that the Braves have been exploring trade talks to acquire Baldelli.

Link.

Before I go any further about Giles, let me relate a conversation I had with an American League scout this afternoon, one who is both quite familiar with Tampa Bay’s needs, and one who was just in the Dominican scouting winter ball.

First, he told me the Devil Rays would do the Rocco Baldelli-to-Braves deal in a heartbeat for shortstop Yunel Escobar and a certain starting pitcher. But that pitcher ain’t Kyle Davies. It’s Chuck James. They’re drooling over him.

But I don’t see the Braves giving up James, and don’t think they should, for what it’s worth (again, Braves haven’t asked my opinion on this matter, but I’m ready by the phone should they call).

The D-Rays love James’ major league track record - it’s less than one season, but impressive - and believe Davies’ health is too much a question mark. But they do like Escobar a lot and would like him to be their future shortstop.

They could use catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia - also being discussed in a potential deal for Baldelli - to flip for a starting pitcher, but again that’s not as definite as getting one in hand. Anyway, this scout seemed to believe the team that gets Baldelli will have to give up a good starter.

If the Braves are pursuing Baldelli, would they be willing to part with Andruw Jones?

The Rays want Chuck James but the Braves are offering Davies. What if the Cubs stepped in and helped the deal go through while at the same time netting Andruw Jones?

The Cubs could swap Joneses with the Braves and send a couple of pitchers in the Marshall, Marmol, Mateo group. To help the Braves with the loss of Escobar and Giles, the Cubs might even offer up Patterson, Cedeno, or Theriot.

Sure, the Braves could get Baldelli and keep Jones. Baldelli could play a corner spot and then replace Andruw in 2008. But if the Braves are hot after Baldelli, his greater value is in CF. Jones could be moved.

Getting involved in this could help in a number of ways. The Braves might be able to use some of the pieces gained from the Cubs to entice the Rays to do the deal with Davies instead of James. Or, by getting more pitchers from the Cubs, the Braves may be less reluctant to send James to the Rays to get the deal done.

Either way, I think these are discussions the Cubs should become involved in.

A. Jones would look very nice in CF patrolling between Murton and Soriano.

Andruw Jones would be a great pickup but I think the Braves would demand Murton & Marshall & E Patterson and one of the other AAA M's or even Guzman...they then would ship Davies and a Cub AAA and package for Baldelli....

Cubs appear stuck with J Jones and that might not be bad, since Theriot or DeRosa could platoon with Jones against RHP'ers and the Cubs could have a balanced lineup for '07. They then could sign A-Jones and then trade J-Jones in '08 by inserting Pie into LF or allow Jones to go FA and insert Pie in CF and live with the platoon another year.

I woul much rather help the O's get Baldelli- a three way with them that nets us Tejada would be dandy-

O's get=Baldelli+Jones+Izturis+Marshall

Rays get=Penn+Marmol+Corey Patterson+Scott Moore

Cubs get=Tejada+Gibbons

We're basically trading a package of marshall+Marmol+Moore for Tejada-Plus we only take on around 2-3M from tejada's deal next year plus gibbons 4-5M. the O's save money and replace Penn with Marshall and get Baldelli for the next few years at a reasonable price- The Cubs could then just go with Pie in CF-

RF-Soriano

2BDeRosa

1B-Lee

SS-Tejada

3B-Aram

C-Barrett

LF-Murton/Gibbons

CF-Pie

Andruw Jones is a FA next season and he has every intention of making it to the market. Would hate for the Cubs to overpay and not be able to sign him to an extension.

Think his agent is looking for something in the neighborhood of 7 years and 150 million with a no-trade clause.

No thanks on Jones. You'll never re-sign him and the Cubs would have to give up a fortune in players. Ditto for Tejada--I'd love to have him, but the Orioles as-always will ask for the moon in players.

I'm resigned to Murton, Soriano and Jock in the OF for 07.

Way to go Cubs for setting the table! If Jones will bring us a championship next year and walk after we win it, so be it, I'll take that championship. If not and we have no chance, no thank you. Too expensive both to try and keep and to trade for.
