Apparently, George Offman of the score has reported that the Cubs are pursuing him. What kind of package do you think it would take to pry him loose from the Rays? It wasn't too long ago they were hailing him as the next Joe DiMaggio.

Yes, I can now confirm that Ofman did say that "The White Sox and the Cubs are both pursuing Rocco Baldelli".

Boatload of potential... probably could be another Grady Sizemore if he ever learned to control the strike zone.

I'd go after him, but given what TB has been asking in trades, chances are the price will be too high.

Apparently they were talking with the Braves about a Baldelli for Chuck James swap. If that is the case I am sure they would ask for Hill therefore making the chances of Baldelli coming 0%.

I don't really know how I feel about Baldelli. I think I'd rather keep Jones.

Tampa is impossible to deal with, they always ask for the moon, that's why trades rarely get done with them.

What happened to Jonny Gomes, he's the one I'd want from Tampa's OF if I had the choice.

They have a new GM now and I believe you are thinking of the old regime down there. The new group is a little more willing to work out deals.

Gomes had an injured hand (?) that sapped all his power. He should be fine in 2007.

Injured shoulder.

EDIT: Had surgery during the offseason.

I haven't seen that little more willingness to work out deals yet. Maybe it will just take holding out on them a bit more. Right now, they appear to be asking for the moon for their players.

I was going to say shoulder. But hand sounds just as correct. Maybe both!

You know, besides the age, I went and looked at Baldelli's stats. They look almost identical to Matt Murton's. I like Murton, so I'd like Baldelli, but shouldn't we be shooting higher for one of those two spots? And since we already have Murton, and he's cheap, I think the preference is clear.

I still like the idea of pursuing a Ryan Church/Wily Mo Pena platoon if that were at all possible, and use Jock with someone like Ohman and Mateo to go get a Westbrook or Jennings.

A bit off-topic, but since we're talking Tampa....is there any hope at this point for BJ Upton as a SS, or have they pretty much concluded that he needs to be in the OF?

Either way, it makes sense. His OBP didn't drop that much and his BB% actually increased appreciably, but his BABIP dropped severely - as did his LD%. The peripherals suggest something that affected his swing, rather than some problem with his approach at the plate. If healthy, I'd actually expect him to have his best year in 2007.

I really hope the White Sox win out on Baldelli, then.

He's the type of player Hendry swoons for. Little plate discipline, very toolsy, history of injury trouble, coming off a performance he's unlikely to repeat.

For some reason, he's had very good luck with BABIP in his short career. If his BABIP was more reasonable for his line drive percentage last year, though, his stats would have looked like this:

.255/.295/.486

Maybe there's some reason he's able to keep his BABIP so high, but I don't know what it would be.

If he becomes a Cub, I hope he does well, but we already have Felix Pie in the minors, who projects to have a career like Baldelli's (without, we hope, the injury problems).

I think they've given up on Upton at SS. They traded for Ben Zobrist who they really like at SS.

With that said, I'd love to have BJ Upton at short.
