It would be just the Cub's luck that he got hurt.

While there's always the chance of him getting hurt, I appreciate the fact that he doesn't seem like he just wants to rest on this contract. Generally speaking, I've heard nothing but good things about his work ethic (the position switch, nonwithstanding), so I'm happy that he wants to be the best he can for the Cubs.

That's nice that he's offering at all, but no.

Why? If you put Soriano at 2B, you could then acquire a corner OF who could at least put up Soriano's numbers or better. The average corner OF outproduces the average 2B. A team with a slugger in RF and Soriano at 2B would be better off than a team with Soriano in RF and DeRosa at 2B. Even after you factor in Soriano's poor defense at 2B, that lineup would still produce more runs.

Except that all corner outfielders except Drew, who Bruce has been nice enough to let us know isn't seen as an option, are off the market.

Sure, if Cincy calls you up and offers Dunn for Novoa, lol, you take it, and if you then need to put Soriano at second, somehow we'll survive.

"I know that Chicago already has Mark DeRosa at second base, but if they want me to play second, I will," he said.

A possible infield of Lee, Soriano, Ramirez, and Barrett would rock.

I don't want our $138M player getting hurt playing winter ball. He can work on 2B in spring training.

I'm going to be in the DR from Dec 26th to January 13th...where can I find out where they're playing? That would be awesome to do on one of my free days.

The team Alfonso would play on is the Estrellas Orientales (EO on the schedule). Cubs' catching prospect Jose Reyes is on the team.

Thanks a ton for that. The schedule on there only goes through Dec. 22nd though. I thought I had read somewhere that they play Oct-Jan. I take it the season ends in late December and that playoffs run through January? Any idea where the games are? Are they all at the stadium in Santo Domingo? Thanks.

From past experience, I believe they play approximately 50 games and that's what the schedule shows through December, so I guess that the schedule linked is correct and is for the regular season. The playoffs are probably in January and the Caribbean World Series is in February.

Estrellas Orientales play in San Pedro de Macorís. The two teams that play in Santo Domingo are the Tigres del Licey (Felix Pie's team) and Leones del Escogido.

Thanks, hopefully I'll be able to catch a game sometime between the 26th and New Years. I know there are night games, so that will make it easier.

I'm not as concerned with him getting hurt since that's a possibility at any time in life - granted, putting yourself in a position to be hurt more often isn't great, but I like the fact that he's asking for permission and not being a "pain in the butt" or anything. I'd be more concerned that he might wear down later in the 2007 season due to too many games in winter ball.

I've been thinking about the whole 2B thing - at his age and the fact that he's already played alot of time at 2B, I'd guess unless he runs across an excellent teacher who can transform him into at least an above average 2B, he should stay in the OF.

That said - I can't help but drool at the possibility of getting his kind of power at an IF position and down the road being able to stack the OF with more sticks (Andrew Jones comes to mind).

I'm undecided whether Soriano should be risking an injury by playing winter ball, but after remembering some of the more bizarre injuries that happened last year (what with knives and stairs and motorcycles) i guess its ok. i mean after all just getting up out of bed is already a risk for some people.

What are you going to be in DR for? Sounds like an interesting trip.

Winter break study abroad. Hopefully it's a good time. One day we're going to actually have class about baseball in their society...that will likely be my favorite day.

I'd let him play. We can't keep him in a bubble, he'll have to play eventually. I would however require that he play the position he will play for the Cubs. Getting some work in at RF or CF could be helpful to us. I also like that he wants to be playing and staying fresh, rather than swimming in pools of money.
