someone think of a good nickname for alfonso besides the obvious ones.

I'm gonna stick with the classic Fonzie.

Dumbest signing ever.

A high K, low OBP, bad defensive player. YES!!

But he's got power!! And he's FAST!!

He's also 32, has exactly one very good season, and appearantly whiny as hell.

And EIGHT YEARS?

I can't believe I just found out about this, I hadn't been able to listen to the radio or watch TV all day. This is disgusting news to me though. Nice job overpaying a player who is probably not even close to worth his contract. Nice job Hendry.

Meanwhile the high OBP, good defense, power hitting lefty who could also handle center and less than half of Soriano's price can sit out there. GREAT!

Can we please stop with the 8 years until we actually find out the terms of the contract? If the contract is 6/90MM with two team or vesting option, that would be a big difference from a straight up guaranteed 8/136MM contract.

Agreed. I have a feeling this might turn out like the Aramis situation. Everyone getting pissy over the original reports and then come to find out Hendry did a great job.

What were the other offers for Soriano anyway?

None others have been made public yet.

Houston had made an offer, but I don't know if the numbers were released on it. I believe they made it on the same day that they offered on to CLee.

Sorianos a 40/40 player.hes more versatile, less fragile.Drew does have a much better obp. Whether you or I feel that hes the best FA out there, thats how hes regarded.

uh somewhere in this thread theres a point i made where 122 games of JD Drew is a heck of a lot better than 162 games of Soriano in CF.

Unfortunately, you failed to provide any facts to support your argument. Last year 162 games of Soriano was >>> than J.D. Drew. I think we need to stop assuming that age automatically equals decline in production. Soriano is only 30 years old. It is possible that he can continue his better numbers over the next few years.

I'll be saying "AAAYYYYY!" with thumbs up.

There is a reason he will be on his 4th team in 5 years.

Drew

2003 - Cardinals

2004 - Braves

2005 - Dodgers

2006 - Dodgers

2007 - ?

Soriano

2003 - Yankees

2004 - Rangers

2005 - Rangers

2006 - Nationals

2007 - Cubs

Seems like they're both about to be on their 4th team in 5 years.

At some point we have to look beyond the stats. I don't care what they say, only having a player 2/3 of the season a a premium price isn't acceptable. The you start dealing with unknowns like when the player is going to be injured, which part of the season will you be missing your high-priced production. The stretch run, the playoffs?

IMO, if two players are even in the same area code production-wise, you take the one who will be healthy, every time.

Do you know of the top of your head what the longest NSBB thread is/was?

You can like up all of the GM's in baseball, and if you provided them a choice

of Drew for 122 games, or Soriono for 162 games, they will take Soriono for 162...all of them.

Hahahaha...that's a completely ridiculous claim if you've read the whole thread. KC has provided a ton of facts to back up his case. There's still room to disagree with his case and provide facts to counter it, but he has provided a lot of factual information to back his opinion. To claim otherwise is to disrespect the work he has done here and lower your own credibility.

I can tell you with some definitiveness without reading it that the Nomar trade thread was probably the longest (and I wasn't even here).

Luxury Tax:

148 - 2007

155 - 2008

162 - 2009

170 - 2010

178 - 2011

Would it then be fair to assess the expected CPIB (consumer price index of baseballplayers) to be about 4.5%? My excel is broke, but using that, could some one create a present value of the last few years of Sorianos contract assuming no money deferred and its not front or back weighted? Off the top of my head I would say in the last few years, his contract will be the equivalent of about 13M/year. So then the question is, do you think Sori will be as good then as Sheff is now. Its an interesting way of looking at things. Of course that would mean that Sori would actually have to improve.

Kinda off topic. I am not a huge fan of this signing to be honest, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. For the first time since April, I have not had complete and utter pessimism and negativity towards the Cubs. It kinda feels good :)

(by the way, I did NOT say I was optimistic yet )
