Aw, c'mon...it's like eating at the dorm instead of McDonald's one time each month!

But man, those books. Im taking 18 hours next summer and TAing a 3 hour course. ITs the books that kill me! especially those big thick math books.

that and my BA and BP cost 100 or so a year by themselves.

And personally, I'd like to encourage future participation on this level!

its funny, i came to this place because it was the only cubs place that had a place to discuss the draft. im sure im the only one who came here because of the drawing card that is the mlb draft.

JD Drew. Maybe Diasuke.

Drew was looking for 4/56. That went up.

Sorianos a 40/40 player.hes more versatile, less fragile.Drew does have a much better obp. Whether you or I feel that hes the best FA out there, thats how hes regarded.

I love this thread

I'm having fun. :thumleft: (don't these things make non-premium people curious what the heck this is for or what it looks like?)

They most certainly do... but not like $50 curious.

(Sorry Tim, broke college student here)

Well...it's an idea to think about.

You'll have to forgive me for not thinking. Between the two papers I'm simultaneously writing while trying to keep up with this the Soriano stuff, my head is fried.

On a side note, I might be the only person here who's read every single post in this thread.

I have been laughing so hard reading these posts. Soriano not a good player? Soriano overrated?

he is a good player, but he's also overrated. he's being paid like one of the best players in baseball, and he clearly isn't.

How is he overrated? Please no stats involved. Your opinion.

And I agree with you that he doesn't deserve to get a $136 million dollar contract. But I will never consider him to be overrated.

So you agree that he is overrated?

Maybe overpaid, but that does that mean overrated? Who are these raters anyway?

GMs don't pay more than they think a player is worth. If they don't think they're worth the money, they wouldn't pay it.

Isn't overrated when the rater thinks a player is more valuable then he actually is?

yep, that's why being paid too much means that at least 1 person (Hendry) is overrating him

Dumbest signing ever.

A high K, low OBP, bad defensive player. YES!!

But he's got power!! And he's FAST!!

He's also 32, has exactly one very good season, and appearantly whiny as hell.

And EIGHT YEARS?

I can't believe I just found out about this, I hadn't been able to listen to the radio or watch TV all day. This is disgusting news to me though. Nice job overpaying a player who is probably not even close to worth his contract. Nice job Hendry.

Meanwhile the high OBP, good defense, power hitting lefty who could also handle center and less than half of Soriano's price can sit out there. GREAT!

Actually, the first year that the site was in existence, the way many of the espn.com crew got recruited was that we had a chat with Callis to discuss the draft. I went over there and invited some of those regulars on that basis.

Fortunately, they stuck around. :D

There is a reason he will be on his 4th team in 5 years.

Because he chose to opt out of his contract?

Thats the reason I see.

What about the other two? Listen, I know Drew is easily more productive than Sori when on the field, but even Kerry Wood strung together a full few seasons. I'm far from convinced Drew's DL days are behind him.

I think giving Drew 3-5 guranteed years at the same price as Lee or Ramirez is at least as high on the lunacy scale as giving Sori 8/136.

Yes, I appreciate the acknowledgment too, :angry non-premium guy:

I'd rather be an angry non premium guy than an angry premium guy who is so upset that the Cubs got soriano. .

The Cubs have so many holes, spending all your resources to plug one isn't efficient.

Which gets to my point. If the Cubs have told Hendry he can spend up to the luxury tax limit, then I really don't have anything against this signing other than length of the deal, which was going to be required to get him on board. As long as we can still make the other required upgrades, I'm okay with things. In general, I prefer a "Stars and Scrubs" approach, because it is easier to upgrade the scrubs later on.

Now, just how much of a "star" Soriano is going to be is very open for debate.

I'm personally optimistic that he is turning a corner with his pitch recog. / plate discipline. I'm hoping that bringing in Perry as hitting coach will help if Soriano can adapt to the zone hitting approach.

BTW - If I had unlimited funds this offseason, I'd sign Drew for CF, trade for Manny, put Murton in RF and stick Fonzie at 2B. Defense be damned. :)

I think we can all agree that this offseason is much different then others that we've all come a custom to. If Soriano signings limited the Cubs ability to improve other facets of the team I would be against it, but I think the Cubs are still looking to add the needed ingrediants.

Tim, if funds are unlimited............ I would love to see an OF of MRam, Drew, and Murton. I also wouldn't mind if Pie was in CF if Murton were to be traded in a deal for pitching.

Admittedly I didn't read all 78 pages of this thread so excuse me if this has been discussed but does anyone think the Cubs might move Soriano to the middle of the order? Sure seems like a waste to me to have a guy with 46 homers hitting leadoff.

I agree with some of the sentiment, but Sori is 30 right now, not 32.

Can we please stop with the 8 years until we actually find out the terms of the contract? If the contract is 6/90MM with two team or vesting option, that would be a big difference from a straight up guaranteed 8/136MM contract.

uh somewhere in this thread theres a point i made where 122 games of JD Drew is a heck of a lot better than 162 games of Soriano in CF.

There have been a few sources say the Cubs got him wanting him to bat leadoff. Also, his stats seem to show he's more comfortable and performs better batting leadoff.
