This team has a lot of money locked up in Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano now and Z pretty soon (hopefully). As long as these contract don't prohibit the Cubs from improving in other areas, then I'm okay with it. Hendry needed to overpay to get someone to come here in this market. I couldn't care less how much money the Cubs spend as long as they put together a winning ballclub. I would rather have gotten Drew and Lugo, but it's better than nothing. I really wouldn't mind seeing the Marshall, Mateo, Guzman, Marmol's of the world dealt. I would hate to see them bring us the same return as Leicester, Welly, etc. which was essentially nothing. I would love to see Eyre dealt as well for some starting pitching help. Edited by sherwood921

Leading off a game with a home run is a huge start. Teams that score first in the first inning have a much better chance of winning. I don't know the exact numbers, but they are greatly towards the team scoring first. A leadoff homerun gets the team jacked up from the start.

The one thing better than leading off a game with a HR is leading off the game will multiple runs. A guy who can get on base better and costs significantly less allowing you to invest elsewhere is better than the half dozen or so leadoff homers Sori will hit. Drew, Lugo>>>>>>Soriano, Izturis

you know what's better than a leadoff HR? a two or three run homer in the second.

it's the norm of late and I've been standing on my head trying to say it for the past three years everytime someone says "you can't compete with that in your corner outfield spots."

center, short, second and catchers are not all purely defensive players like they used to be. third and first are on par with left and right these days.

the 'gotta get rightfield production out of right field' is very old school thinking IMO.

well, you've convinced me. thanks for the info.

no way soriano plays RF. he's here for CF or LF.

Bruce Miles challenges your statement.

He even said "Very sure."

I'll be honest though, I don't know to think. I trust bruce more than any other single source . . . but when every other source is agreeing on something that Bruce disagrees with, I don't know. I'm in hurry to know though, we'll see eventually. :)

Any elucidation on why you foresee this, Bruce?

No reason to hurt the rest of us...we didn't do anything wrong.

If it's 6/$95m with 2 option years, that's a much better looking signing.

QFT

Agreed. If Hendry got that, he's having a hell of an off-season, DeRosa included.

If it was 6 years with two option years it would probably be 6/102. With two option years at 17 mil. If it is 6/95 then he would have two option years at over 20 mil a season.

A case of vodka, a couple bags of rice, some western porn and Kim Il's email address probably gets it done.

Bruce,

Is there any chance you can clear up this contract with us. Is it 6 years with 2 option years or 8 years gauranteed?

Bruce, anyword as to what is next on his agenda? I assume pitching and will he look for one via trade and another as a FA?

Looks like pitching is the next item on the to-do list.

Bruce, is there anything to this Lugo in CF business?

What about Lugo elsewhere?

I haven't been 'round much lately. What is this "Lugo in center" groundswell? Where is it coming from?

Baseball Musings just posted their defensive numbers for LF in 2006. Soriano was middle of the pack. Murton was 8th in the league.

Soriano did just fine in left. He wasn't outstanding, but he wasn't a joke, either. He actually picked up about 8 more outs than expected. He was probably better in left than he would have been at second. However, Matt Murton is better.

20 million left, thats alot to work with especially considering we have some talent to trade. Nice, I like.

About jones in centerfield, is everyone confident that he has the range to perform there? When is the last time he has played there? My feeling is that Jones' defense is a bit overrated. He doesn't seem to get the best jump on the ball. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to throwing , and the bone chips. But I'm not sure he'll be able to play there. My preference would probably be to trade him for pitching and subsequently make a trade for wells or crisp or play just pie. An outfield of murton and soriano needs a defensive anchor in center.

Drew = injury prone, no thanks.

That opinion holds water 3 years ago.
