According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are continuing to pursue free agent Julio Lugo.

They're not going to leave anything for anyone else? Rosenthal doesn't know whether Lugo would play shortstop or center field for the team. If manager Lou Piniella wants his former player back as a shortstop, the Cubs could then look to send Cesar Izturis to Boston or Toronto.

If we can send Izturis and whatever prospects to Boston for Crisp (assuming they sign Drew), I would be fine with letting Jones go. Cleveland and Colorado don't match up well for Jones, but possibly a three way deal could be worked out (Anaheim?). Or even just a three way for the prospects to trade to Boston. I don't see anything in Toronto that helps us (besides the obvious).

Haha, I think I'll leave it at that. Who knows the havoc that could be unleashed if the founder of the site gets riled up.

Trade Izturis and prospects to Boston for Crisp, Sign Lugo, unload Jones and we're good to go as far as everyday players, IMO.

What about Jones/Izturis/something else to Atlanta for Renteria? Then we could sign Lofton or Roberts.

Because there is no reason for Atlanta to make that trade and Lofton and Roberts are downgrades from Jones?

Yeah, I really doubt Atlanta would go for it unless we threw in a really good prospect or something, but I'd much rather have Renteria/Lofton than Jones/Izturis.

Eww at lugo in CF. I'd rather play Pie immediately than sign him to the deal he's going to get, plus the production he's going to put up is not going to be worth it.

What about Kenny Lofton people? he hasn't had a bad season since he left cleveland. Last year he put up a .360 OBP, and he was relatively healthy for most of last year. He'd be a great stop gap option for Pie, and would fill a need for OBP at the CF position. Sign him up for a 1 year/4 mil deal please.

Sign Lugo for SS. Put Soriano in CF. Make a trade for Kearns.

I'd take Kearns or Church. Idealy we could get them both to be platoon partners in RF. looking at their splits, that would be a heck of a platoon.

Another possibiliy would be to sign Lugo for SS and find a way to get Andruw Jones from the Braves.

Getting Jones would be tricky as it would require meeting the Braves price and getting Jones to waive his no-trade clause.

I've seen Jones go in some deals to Boston for Manny, but they all have looked unrealistic because the amount of money they're going to pay manny (7M more than the amount to Jones), would cut into the money they are going to end up signing Glavine for (and yes, they will get him, since the mets won't). 3 team deal with Hudson to cubs anyone?

If we are going to spend that kind of money on CF I'd rather it be on Drew, who we will have for longer term and not have to give up any players to get. Not to mention fits our need (OBP) better than Andruw

unfortunately, mr. miles has indicated there is zero chance of the cubs signing drew.

Lugo is only 30? Wow, thought he was mid-30's. I'd love for the Cubs to get him, especially if he brings his DRay game with him: 871 OPS in 322 PA before he was traded to LA?

Lugo in CF until Pie is ready, then switching back to short would be OK by me.

I'm on board with that idea. I just took a look at the potential free agent shortstops after the 2007 season. The list isn't pretty:

Carlos Guillen

David Eckstein

Omar Vizquel

Neifi Perez

John McDonald

Ramon Martinez

Michael Young (team option)

Cesar Izturis (team option)

Juan Uribe (team option)

The Rangers will probably pick up Young's option - it's pretty cheap.

And Guillen will probably move to 1B in 2008 - it might have even happened for 2007 had the Tigers not re-signed Sean Casey. Vizquel is still productive, but getting up there in the years.

Julio Lugo is probably better than the rest of those guys on the list. The Cubs do have a hole at SS starting in 2008 if they don't pick up Izturis' option, which we all should hope they don't. Signing Lugo makes a lot of sense to me. He's your SS for 2 or 3 years starting in 2008 - in 2007 he plays CF or SS depending on what the Cubs do with Izturis. Boston and Toronto look to have openings at SS.

How about we get SP before we go spending oh ~$20 mil on players like Lugo, Kearns, Church. We don't have an unlimted budget people. We need to get 2 pitchers before we even worry about who else to get offensively.
