I'm listening to Sports Central on WGN radio and Kap said

that Jim Hendry told an, unnamed, agent this week that while he can't force Soriano to come to the Cubs if he wants to play elsewhere he (Hendry) will Not be outbid by anyone to get him... That's interesting because the Cubs aren't known for outbidding anyone and maybe it means that the payroll will go higher than expected.

I know that the luxury tax threshold has been raised from 117M to around 130M(?) or so with the new agreement.

Also, the Cubs may be looking for Lugo in CF and Soriano in LF. They also confirmed that they have been talking to Gil Meche's agent.

Finally, FYI, Joe Girardi will be on later to talk about winning Manager of the Year.

Thanks for the update.

Any GM with a clue would've signed Lugo for either 2B or SS and would've passed on DeRosa. It's almost as if Hendry remembered Lugo was on the FA market right after he signed DeRosa.

I like what I'm hearing about Soriano, but I'm a little disappointed that there is still no mention of Drew to the Cubs at all.

So what happens to our league minimum, solid LF in that scenario?

I think some of the speculation on here is probably right on that Hendry is trying to drive up value on Izturis to move him, then take Lugo and put him at SS with Soriano in CF. Whether or not Hendry can actually get that done is anybody's guess.

I could totally live with Soriano and Lugo if it means getting rid of Izturis.

If true, my guess is Murton's traded for pitching or becomes a 4th OF.

Barf. Pass. Murton in 3 years is going to be better than Sori or Lugo in 3.

SS- Lugo

CF- Soriano

LF- Murton

or

CF- Lugo

LF- Soriano

SS- Izturis

No brainer.

But, even better would be:

CF-Vernon Wells

2b- Soriano

LF- Murton

SS- Lugo

Murton is already better than Lugo.

My friend said they were talking about a Jones and Wuertz for Westbrook trade. Did they say this?

Kaplan said the other night, Hendry loves Murton, but that he almost guaranteed that Jones would not be with the team to start next year.

RF Derosa/Jones

Good news on the Jacque front,

Wish it would be Eyre instead of Wuertz, but I doubt the Indians would be interested in that type of money for a reliever.

I think the new threshold is $148M -- at least according to a Red Sox site that was tracking their payroll and projecting their final budget to be ~$140M.

I linked to it, but it's likely lost in the morass of either the JD Drew thread or the 51.1 thread.

Supposedly, Boston showed some interst in Izzy. I really can't tell if JH is playing possum or if he just really likes Cesear's glove.

No, none of those names have been mentioned tonight. However, Westbrook was specifically mentioned yesterday in trade speculation involving our bullpen (that was Levine on ESPN AM 1000).

Edit: I didn't hear them mention those guys but they may have talked about them in the few minutes I was away from the radio.

Hendry, Hendry...... [-(

Why build up expectations of signing Soriano when you and I both know that the Cubs won't? I'm resigned to the fact that we won't get Soriano, I'm over it. Why delay that with other people? Why give them hope?

I just hope he trades Izturis or Jones, and keeps Murton. IMO, that's a victory if we got market value for either Jones or Izturis.

Schnikes that's good news if true!

Thanks, you're probably right. I knew it was significantly higher but I couldn't remember the exact amount. I think the speculation about the Cubs going up to 115M was because they wanted to avoid the previous luxury tax limit of 117M. They have more playing room now.

thats fantastic news. Id try to change Wuertz to Eyre/Howry though, but thats still great. Westbrook would be a great #3/#4 option for the rotation, and would be a steady, solid arm for us for a good 2-3 years. I can't wait to see the type of improvement hed make going from the AL to the NL. He has pitched 200+ innings for 3 straight years, and doesnt walk to many batters. Those things are two attributes we need out of at least one of our starters next year.
