This is a bit intriguing:

"Perhaps the most fascinating development in the aftermath of the DeRosa signing is that the Cubs continue to pursue free agent Julio Lugo, whom they envision batting leadoff and possibly moving to center field, according to major-league sources.

Lugo, a shortstop for most of his career, probably would fit with the Cubs only if the team failed to land Soriano. He has played just one game in center, but he's a terrific athlete and high-energy player who was a favorite of Piniella's with the Devil Rays.

The Cubs also could trade shortstop Cesar Izturis, perhaps to the Red Sox, to create a spot for Lugo. Izturis, however, is valued for his defense -he won a Gold Glove in 2004 and was an All-Star in '05."

Either way, I like the idea of trading Cesar to Boston!

I'm not convinced that Hendry actually like Izturis much. Weren't the rumors that after the Dodgers said no to sending prospects for Maddux, that Hendry took Izturis just to look like he wasn't gving Greg away for free?

If Cesar's gone, Lugo in CF doesn't make much sense.

But as it is, Lugo in CF doesn't make much sense. He's just a hair more productive than Pierre. And he's got no experience out there. If they just say they are willing to play Lugo out there, in order to not look desperate to trade Izturis, that's another thing.

Hmmm...

Sign Lugo for SS. Trade Cesar and Dempster to Boston for a solid arm, then deal that arm in a package with a couple of ours to get Crawford or Baldelli?

Me likey.

OOORRRR...

JJ, Cesar and Dempster for Manny?

Other arms to TB for Baldelli.

Lugo

Murton

Lee

Manny

ARam

Barrett

Baldelli

Derosa/Theriot

I'll take it. Where do I sign?

I have zero issues with getting Lugo. He's WAY better than Izturis. I also don't have an issue with Hendry playing it up as though Izturis wouldn't be supplanted by Lugo if it would help keep his trade value from plummeting.

Let's just cross our fingers that Hendry is only playing up Izturis rather than actually pining for his defensive skills.

At the same time, I want Lugo at SS or 2b, NOT CF. There are too many other options to actually play CF to fill it with Lugo.

I wouldn't label it that bad. Boston did expose Manny to irrevocable waivers only about a year ago. That deal actually happened and Boston would have gotten nothing back for Manny.

I doubt Manny is going anywhere.

Considering the way the free agent market is looking this year, $20M per year isn't looking that outrageous any more.

gotta say, this is the funniest trade suggestion i've seen in quite some time. Unless you're talking about Manny Aybar.

Boston might want to end the Manny saga and the Cubs are one of the few teams that have the money to absorb that contract. Dempster fills there hole at the back end of the bullpen, Iztuirz fills the role Alex Gonzalez did last year all glove no bat. Maybe the Cubs toss in a prospect it could happen. Boston looks to building there future on pitching and defense.

looks like they'll be waiting another 86 years for a world series victory then

Pierre 2006: .292\.330\.388\.718

Pierre Career: 303\.350\.377\.727

pierre 3-year split: .298\.343\.383\.726

Lugo 2006: .278\.341\.421\.762

Lugo Career: .277\.340\.402\.742

Lugo 3-year split: .284\.348\.405\.753

It doesn't really matter which cross-section you take, Lugo is the better player across the board. Lugo's 2005 and 2006 also look a lot nicer than Pierre's.

It is sub-.800 OPS in CF, but it does represent an respectable upgrade over Pierre. I'd rather have Drew or even Wells, but I won't be disappointed with a creative approach, such as Lugo.

btw, I can't find it now, but someone said if we hadn't signed DeRosa, Blanco and traded for Izturis, we could have Lugo and also sign a decent starting pitcher. Yeah, maybe about 5 years ago. Lugo will get close to $10M per year, and nobody is getting a decent starting pitcher for $2-3M per.

I think that JJ & Dempster would be a logical trade option with Boston. They need a RF now that Nixon has left.

I doubt that Lugo figures into this at all. Afterall why wouldn't Boston just sign Lugo themselves? I would imagine that if the Cubs get Drew or a different corner OF (Heck even Nixon). I like Boston as a trading a trading partner as we can fill some of their needs and likewise right back to us.
