The contract will be the biggie for me. 3/15? Ok, not so bad, so long as he has a fair to middling season he'll be tradeable at 2/10. But something stupid like 3/25? Hell no.

However, if we're just looking for a 5th starter innings eater who can (probably) keep his ERA south of 5, why not just tell Dempster to start?

Betcha he ends up costing a bit more than 3/25.

Going by the rumor with Cleveland, our rotation could very easily be

Carlos Zambrano

Rich Hill

Jake Westbrook

Gil Meche

Wade Miller/Mark Prior/Young arm

Not jumping up and down at that. Really going to need Prior to make a comeback to have a real chance.

If that is actually the rotation, they had better be adding two impact bats to the lineup.

I hear a lot about this guys stuff, but what exactly does he have that he hasn't shown? He doesn't strike many guys out. He doesn't prevent the longball. What am I missing in terms of this supposed stuff and the results he's gotten from it?

If you sub in Schmidt for Meche that's a very decent rotation. If not, its middling.

Jerome Williams redux?

I can't fathom why, after last year especially, Hendry would go and get a guy who averages less than 6 IP per start with a whip of almost 1.5. I agree, Yeche.

I tell you, only Jimbo could look at a pool of Vincente Padilla, Miguel Batista, Ted Lilly, Gil Meche, etc., and pull the wrong one out.

I've supported Hendry a lot in the past, but this is just getting ridiculous. We overpaid by about a million a year for DeRosa. Forgiveable, if he was really Hendrys starting 2B target, well, he's dumb, but I can forgive overpaying to get your man. But overpaying by a million a year for Hank White? Idiocy. Soto would have done fine. There would be multiple veteran backups who can't hit available all the way up until the start of the season, mostly for the minimum. And now we're going to pay a quick sign premium to Gil freaking Meche?

Inexcusible. Between these three we'll be paying 11.5 to 15 million depending on Meche's contract. Waste.

Meche was talked about by some as a guy who could be a value sign, due to his poor career numbers and lack of stability as far as innings/starts go. The theory was that if you gave a guy like that $4-5m, you might have a 30 start 190 inning 100 ERA+ kind of pitcher, which is okay.

The value was in the supposed lack of interest to pay him much. If you end up paying him a lot of money, and/or guaranteeing him any more than 1 year, you are erasing all that value, and just overpaying another below average pitcher.

As most people I think know, Meche missed all of 2 seasons with injury (2001 and 2002). He came back, and has been brilliant at times and terrible at others. Most of the criticism says that it is simply a lack of confidence with him-when he's on, he will throw a great number of ground balls. It is possible he is just starting to re-gain that confidence from the long injury, but it's hard to tell. He's one of those starters that has the potential to break through, but it is an absolutely huge risk.

And until a guy like that shows he he can break through, you give him short-term low money deals.

I wouldn't have a problem with Meche at 1 year $4-5 million.

Could someone please get Hendry a new list?

I would really like to see the acceptable fans' list. From what I can tell, this board has narrowed Hendry's acceptable signing list to JD Drew and everybody else is subpar or a waste of money.

You are really something man. There's been at least a dozen names out there that have been repeated over and over. Yet you can't do anything but defend Hendry from the big bad wolves who unfairly criticize a GM who has repeatedly shown the ability to field a team that wins more games than the best NBA teams.

Free Agents:

Drew

Soriano, depending on the contract

Igawa

Schmidt, depending on the contract

Lugo, if we move one of our no-hit middle IF's.

Roberts, if we upgrade RF

Trade Targets:

Westbrook

Burrell

A. Jones

Tejada

ARod

V. Wells

But seriously, it's about the contracts, not so much the players themselves. Sign DeRosa to a contract around $2-3m per for 2 years to be a utility guy, that's fine. Sign Blanco to a $15m deal? Whatever.

Sink $6.8m into these guys? Make one a starter? Insanity.

Mark DeRosa and Caesar Iztuis (he was injured for the better part of his time with us so he's like new)

Yeah, that's clearly what everyone has been saying.

Not true.

Acceptable offensive players, to me, via free agency

Soriano (CF)

Drew (CF)

Barry Bonds (glorified 4th OF, getting about 350 at bats spelling Jacque against lefties and Murton against righties that Bonds kills)

Moises Alou (same role as Bonds)

Nomar Garciaparra (middle infield)

Ray Duram (2B)

Tony Graffanino (middle infield)

Julio Lugo (SS)

Frank Catalanotto (4th OF)

Cliff Floyd (4th OF)

Juan Gonzelaz/Richard Hildago/Sammy Sosa (Spring training invites, OF)

Gary Matthews Jr (CF)

Trot Nixon (4th OF)

Craig Wilson (4th OF)

Obviouisly, some are not ideal, there's a few who would highly depend on the cost, and some wouldn't take the roles I want to give them, but all the above could be good singings that make me happy under the right circumstances.

Pitchers

Miguel Batista

Roger Clemens

Tom Glavine

Ted Lilly

Greg Maddux

Vicente Padilla

Jeff Weaver

Any of those would be acceptable as the 5th starter on our team, with the right contract
