My guess is that the Braves would want Marshall or Marmol and a prospect like Patterson.

Then they are highly overating Giles. No thanks.

i'd be very in favor of bringing in coco crisp for centerfield.

buy low, hendry

It would be low....I wouldn't mind Crisp that much...

well it's assuming the red sox acquire jd drew that we go after coco crisp. if they don't get drew they probably won't trade crisp.

I'm betting we could get him for one of our redundant relievers.

Alfonso Soriano-OF- Nationals Nov. 13 - 11:37 am et

Although the Cubs now have Aramis Ramirez locked up, they're still planning to make a strong bid for free agent Alfonso Soriano, sources told the Sun-Times.

Soriano was reportedly the centerpiece of discussions during the Cubs' organizational meetings last week in Mesa. They could also try for Carlos Lee. If the Cubs were able to land Soriano, they could try him in center field, leaving Matt Murton in left.

i know it, i was just saying drew would be so much better in center than crisp.

Hmm. Would he throw a hissy fit about playing CF like he did over playing LF?

I assume they'd broach the subject before signing, instead of springing it on him in March. And I'd bet he'd be fine with it. The only benefit to him protesting the move to LF was because he'd presumably get a premium for hitting as a 2B. But if he's getting the money anyway, I think he'd play out there.

I think his performance with the bat was a direct result of not having to carry his errors to the plate. Stay in the OF, Soriano.

I didn't hear him complain about the move after the initial growing pains. Anyone heard whether or not he wants to go back to 2B?

The 2B market is fairly flooded this offseason. I think he makes more money remaining in the OF.

that last part isn't necessarily true if soriano is vastly outproducing other secondbasemen on the market.

if you put alex rodriguez on the market alongside a bunch of joe randas that's not going to make rodriguez any less valuable.

For real? You actually believe that's the reason for Alf's career year?

Soriano isn't a defensive liability in LF. He is at 2B. Does his bat make up for it? Of course, but it detracts from his value as a player.

Compared to the other LF FA, Soriano is a plus defensively and offensively. Compared to other 2B, Soriano is a big plus offensively and a big negative defensively.

Soriano still has a lot of value as a 2B, but not even close to as much as a LF or even a CF.

No one wanted to trade for Soriano this past offseason to be a 2B. That should tell you something.

how is soriano any less of a defensive liabilty in left than at second?

did you watch him play at all this year?

his offensive output is much greater in comparision to secondbasemen versus that of other left fielders.

Drew in right maybe but please not in center that is an injury waiting to happen. Especially considering he really hasn't played center field consistently since 1999. Its hard for me to see him in center again after some of the knee problems he's had. He could probably play the position well its just that with more ground to cover, your risk is higher especially with him.

More realistically, perhaps- Soriano in CF, Murton in LF, trade Jacque for Giles in RF. That's the offensive off season I'd love to see with no Drew.

I gotta wonder...where did all those people go that was violently opposed to picking up Soriano at the trading deadline in 2005? What changed besides a contract year outburst?

ability to play the outfield maybe, and our dire need for offense

the fact that it wasn't worth giving up prospects/established players for him at the time. now he doesn't cost us players, and the nl is so weak that now is the time to go for it all. soriano's 30+ homeruns and 500+ slugging percentage will help reach that goal this year.

we'd probably regret signing him 2-3 years into the contract, but the cubs offense need to significantly improve, and it needs to improve right now. soriano is an improvement.

Here are some of the latest rumors. (Some we have heard already.)

J.D. Drew: The veteran outfielder (or his agent) is rolling the dice, banking on another MLB organization ponying up more than the $33 million (guaranteed) Drew left on the table by opting out of his contract with the Dodgers. The Red Sox, Cubs and Padres have been mentioned as potential suitors.

Gary Matthews Jr.: The 32-year-old late bloomer has drawn considerable interest from teams in both leagues. The Rangers want him back, but the Angels and White Sox have him targeted for their outfield, as do the Giants, Dodgers, Cubs and Astros. Matthews Jr. picked a fine time to have a career year -- .313 batting average, 19 home runs and 79 RBIs -- and his first All-Star Game invitation.

Juan Pierre: As much as the Cubs would like to bring the leadoff batter back to the Windy City, the Brewers are being mentioned as a potential future home for the speedster who would rather reach on a hit than a walk and who posesses a noodle of a throwing arm.

Carlos Lee: After less than half-a-season in the AL with the Rangers, it could be back to the Senior Circuit for the outfielder, who played for the Brewers in 2005 and half of the '06 season. The Astros and Cubs seem to be the most interested, hoping to make room for a player that has averaged 31 home runs and 104 RBIs the past five seasons.
