trying to fan the flames to get this jd drew fire started...

A day after committing $13 million to utility man/second baseman Mark De Rosa, the Cubs re-signed backup catcher Henry Blanco for two years and an option at $5.25 million. Hendry also continued his pursuit of J.D. Drew and Alfonso Soriano.

According to sources, Boston and the Cubs have expressed the most interest in Drew, who used an early-out clause to reach free agency only two years into a five-year, $55 million deal with the Dodgers. He's believed to be seeking $14 million a year for four or five years.

does "and" mean hendry would want both? there's no way they could afford drew and soriano...

Best. News. Yet. (Cubs optimism)

Yeah, but in this case losing Drew and settling for Soriano or vice versa is way better than losing Furcal and settling for Pierre!

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Trade Jones, one of the expensive relievers and move Izturis anywhere and you have enough to just about cover Drew's money.

I don't think they'd have to move much to afford both.

Jones should be easy to move. San Diego has NO ONE to play LF. I hear SD is even looking at Bonds, though it's not clear whether they are serious or just attempting to drive up the price.

Jones could play CF in Colorado. Jones would make for a nice platoon partner with Wily Mo. Jones could be included in a deal to Cleveland for Westbrook. Etc...

If Boston is interested in Izturis, I'd send him there for a bag of balls.

As some of you have posted, getting rid of Izturis, Jones, and Dempster plus Rusch hopefully retiring totals about $15 million. I would think that there is a market for each of those guys especially if the asking price isn't too high (prospects).

The Red Sox aren't through yet. Multiple sources say they are set to sign free-agent outfielder J.D. Drew, the Phillies' old amigo, for a 4-year, $48 million deal...

Per the Philadelphia Daily News

I don't buy the "set to sign" part at all. No way he signs for that little this quickly. He is, after all, a Boras client, and Boras will milk any potential suitors for all they're worth.

I'm sure they might've made an offer like that, but in no way do I believe that he is set to sign anything yet.

My hope is that Soriano signs before Drew so if the Cubs fail at signing Soriano, they can shift resources to Drew and luck into signing the guy I'd prefer.

I'm just hoping we at least get 1 of them...

Me too.

That doesn't make much sense. Opt out of 3/33 for 4/48? Unless having a No Trade Clause was the make or break part of the LA deal, Drew is swapping a red apple for a green apple with that contract.

I think it is more likely he gets 4/56.

My hope (not expectation) is that they just sign both. The money isn't that hard to figure if they dump Jones, Dempster, and Eyre.

What is Westbrook's contract status at this point?

The only way the "set to sign" part is true, is if Drew really wants to be in Boston. I'm pretty sure if he waits, someone (hopefully the Cubs) will offer him more than that.

Like the supposed 4/48, the green apple is just a bit sweeter than the red :).
