Since there is no hurry on Aramis' part, is it possible that Hendry will need to show Aramis that he is serious about improving the team by signing some big names (not there are many big names to draw from) before he'll re-sign with the Cubs?

Just tossing some thoughts out there.

Very good point triple B.

I think Aramis will be a Cub. But, if it gets to the point where other teams can negotiate, I think my confidence level goes fro 80/20 that he will be a Cub to about 40/60. The Angels will give him whatever he wants.

Hendry has the money and motive to beat anyone's offer by a substantial margin, and I'm sure he'll do it if push comes to shove. The Angels or Dodgers GMs can't possibly be as desperate as Hendry. For Hendry it's almost a choice of re-signing Aramis or looking for a new job.

75% sure ramirez stays a cub, id be shocked if hendry botched this

Yes, but we've all been shocked by Hendry before, when he turned a great thing in 2003 into the worst team in baseball in under 3 years.

So the history of shockage is definitely there.

I am funneling all of what little optimism I have toward the hope that Aram signs this week. If he does not sign by the 11th I believe he is gone and it is going to be a long cold winter.

Our hope doesn't like with Ramirez resigning. It could still be a long cold winter with him returning, and the team could still suck. Resigning Ramirez does not improve the team, and this team needs to be improved. They have to resign Ramirez, then still make major improvements.

I agree we need to do much more than resigning Aram but I have little or no confidence that JH can do enough to make this team a contender without resigning him. That would leave him with the task of signing or trading for 2-3 impact bats and 2 impact pitchers. I don't see that happening.

The funny thing is, a lot of people are going to be stunned when he bolts 'suddenly'

Hendry doesn't like long term deals. Moreno probably wouldn't blink at throwing a 7 or 8 year deal at him.

I believe the no longterm deals order came from MacPhail, who as president, would have the team's longterm interest at heart more than a GM.

It also primarily applied to pitchers, not hitters, due to the higher risk of injury.

In general that's true, but the Cubs had a pretty clear no longterm deal practice for everybody. They didn't even get into discussions with the big boys who were looking for big deals. They supposedly flirted with the idea with Hampton, when they supposedly weighed a Hampton vs Sosa gameplan. But even when they decided on Sammy, they refused to go past 4 years.

And after watching Hampton implode, it might just have re-assured their position not to offer too many years.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope Ramirez is a Cub for many years. I just have no faith that Hendry values Ramirez as much as I do.
