From Rotoworld:

KCBS is reporting that the Athletics will soon announce plans to move the club to Fremont and build a new stadium complex there.

The A's have not yet commented, except to say that they hope to make an official major announcement soon. That could happen when Bud Selig travels to the Bay Area next Tuesday. A move to Fremont would likely result in more money for the A's, as they'd probably have an easier time selling luxury boxes due to the promiximity to San Jose. Fans in Oakland would have a more difficult time supporting their team, but it's proven all too difficult for them as is.

I wonder if they will keep the Oakland part of the name? They mention the proximity to San Jose, will they try to get their name in there? Maybe Fremint will just fight for the name. Perhaps a generic California? Looking at a map, Fremont looks almost the same distance from Oakland and San Jose...

I really want another Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem.

Fremont is pretty close to Oakland - a bit to the south (hence closer to San Jose). Fremont is part of silicon valley really. This will keep the neighborhood kids from going but probably no one else will care so long as it stays on the rapid transit line. Hopefully the new stadium would be in a slightly nicer neighborhood.

another aspect is that extension of BART (the light rail) to San Jose is under review right now so this might give a push to that construction. The line currently ends in Fremont.

The A's moving to Fremont will probably mean a larger fan base. I live in the heart of Silicon Valley (Sunnyvale) and it is about the same commute to San Fran as it is to Oakland. The only reason I go to more Giants games is a nicer park and a in a better area than the A's. If the A's move to Fremont many silicon valley baseball fans will go to the A's instead of the Giants games. I think it is a really good move for the A's, plus I can get season tickets :D

The Oakland A's of Fremont. :D

See thats what initially crossed my mind, but by moving closer towards San Jose and perhaps picking up some of that fan base, don't we want them included in there?

The Oakland and San Jose Athletics of Fremont

Fremont is closer to San Jose than Oakland, but it is in Alameda County (like Oakland). It's basically in the middle of the two.

I wish they'd just put a new stadium in a better part of Oakland and leave the team there. They better not re-name the team something lame like the East Bay A's

Will the Raiders stay in Oakland or are they moving back to LA? They can call them 'The Oakland Raiders of Los Angeles'.

its hard to build a stadium on a hillside.

Sunnyvale, here too. I think another factor in the SF vs Oakland thing is the transportation. Its easy to just hop on Caltrain and be dropped off at the park, no matter where on the penninsula youre coming from. Oakland has bart, but its more of a hassle and somewhat limited, depending on where you are coming from.

lewis wolff et al had a big press conference today and announced a bunch of stuff about fremont and how it's going to happen.

unfortuantely, one of the things they announced is that the phrase "of fremont" will be in the team name. early speculation is "san jose a's of fremont."

oh boy.

Although exact distances between the baselines and first row of seating is still to be determined, it's safe to say Cisco Field will offer fans some of the closest vantage points in all of baseball.

A's pitchers beware . . .

How about the Cisco Kids of Fremont?

I would go with the Irvington A's. I wonder if they included ground improvement costs in their estimate?

SF Gate[/url]"]Not only do the A's intend to move to the suburbs, they plan to brag about it.

Owner Lew Wolff announced at a Tuesday news conference that the name of his team will end "of Fremont," as in San Jose A's of Fremont, Silicon Valley A's of Fremont or, as Wolff teasingly suggested, "Omaha A's of Fremont."

San Jose A's of Freemont? What is going on with California teams?
