LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eric Gagne's $12 million option was declined Friday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, making the former NL Cy Young Award winner a free agent.

The Dodgers will pay $1 million to buy out the final year of Gagne's contract, but could attempt to re-sign him at a lower guaranteed salary. Gagne had filed provisionally for free agency on Tuesday.

Would you consider taking a risk on Gagne? Or would you rather sign Kerry Wood?

Depends on the cost / commitment for each.

Wouldn't the difference between them be that Wood would need to adjust to a pen role, whereas Gagne is already comfortable? I'd take a flier on Gagne with a one year deal, especially if we deal Dempster.

Woo hoo, I get to sound newbish. I would take a chance on Gagne. 2 years max, at a cheap price.

Wood on the other hand I want to be in the Cubs' bullpen next year. Really I can see him having no problem adjusting to the pen, and to top it off, imho, I don't see him having nearly the struggles in the pen that he had as a starter. Also, I'm sorry but I got a little excited the minute I saw him come out of the pen, and made everyone look like fools. Check any of the other posts I've actually made, and you will see I am a huge supporter of Wood. Close to being the only one left.

Like so many other moves/trade proposals, acquiring Gagne is dependent on what else we do. If we trade a reliever and don't resign Wood, it could be a good move. But, as great as Gagne has been, I think Offense and starting pitching is a bigger problem.[/i]

Hendry's had enough reclamation projects over the years (Miller and Dempster come to mind). I'd pass on both these guys...damaged goods.

If he insists, then we sign wood to something resembling a shadow of what he got before ONLY if he shows a little loyalty to an organization that has spent enough on drugs, diagnostics, surgery, and treatment for him to break Blue Cross/Blue Shield into bankruptcy. We may as well have at least a shot at getting something for our investment.

Gagne was an animal during the no testing years and then blew out an elbow. Similar to comments about Mota being caught - he looked great when he's on the stuff but looks horrible when he's off. I'll take a pass on Gagne, citing inflated numbers.

Are you saying the drug testing caused his elbow to blow out?

That's not how I read it. I read it as Gange was on HGH and then he blew out his elbow a few seasons later, but not because of the steroids.

His mechanics might have something to do with his arm injuries.

Did he change his delivery to throw that changeup? I don't remember seeing him pitch so I never noticed.

These recent injuries were probably initially started with his leg injuries and compensation for them.

He rushes his upper body and his arm action and lower body can't catch up.

Plus as good as his curve is, it isn't thrown properly.

Which is most likely part of why it looks so filthy.
