From Mark Gonzalez today:

If the Angels are successful in landing either or both, they might deal Chone Figgins, a career .285 hitter who has stolen 114 bases the last two years. The switch-hitting infielder-outfielder played 96 of his 155 games in center field last season.

I don't see this happening, but it would be intriguing. He could be on the block due to his off year this year.

He is so fast though...its like he is driving in runs with his legs.

Yeah but when its cold in Chicago hes going to lose a step which will make all those hits he would have gotten turn into easy ground outs.

Figgins isn't good.

But he's not bad. Well, he was pretty bad this year, but at worst, you get a cheaper, younger Pierre with better defense and more versatility. I wouldn't mind this deal assuming several other things fall into place and that the cost was low. He's essentially Black Ryan Freel with a shade less discipline and a shade more average usually. He had a sudden 30 point BABIP drop last season, so he would be poised for a bounceback.

Don't get too excited...Figgins is Pierre with Ks.

I'm not having lust pains over Figgins or anything, but he is much more valuable than Pierre. The biggest problem with him is that he has declined the past 3 years. If he had numbers like 04-05 he'd be a decent option for CF. But here is some comparison between the two the past 3 seasons:

OBP: Figgins- .350, .352, .336; Pierre- .374, .326, .330

IsoD: Figgins- .054, .062, .069; Pierre- .048, .050, .038

BB: Figgins- 49, 64, 65; Pierre- 45, 41, 32

SLG: Figgins- .419, .397, .376; Pierre- .407, .354, .388

HR: Figgins- 5, 8, 9; Pierre- 3, 2, 3

SB/CS: Figgins- 34/13, 62/17, 52/16; Pierre- 45/24, 57/17, 58/20

So from those numbers Figgins is marginally better, with quite a bit more patience. Then when you add in defense, versitility, age, and cost, he is a significantly better option. But I'd still rather go with Lofton or Pie if it came down to it.

and a better arm and not stuck in center field and about 3 mil cheaper.

And he may cost the Cubs some quality young players just like Pierre. I just don't see Hendry doing this with Pie being a year away from ready.

according to this article the angels might be looking for bullpen help for figgens:

i wonder if ohman & novoa would be enough to get chone. he steals 50 bases, put up a .750 ops & play just about everywhere. he would be a good fit in cf and leading off next year imo.

Let's stop with the fast versatile guys and get players who are actually good baseball players.

why isn't figgins a good player?

How about we give them Dempster for Figgins? Now that might be a deal I could get behind.

if they would want him, it wouldn't be a bad idea as long as the cubs are confident that howry can close.

A .345 career OBP (.336 this season) does not make for a good leadoff hitter.

Not sure how you can post that list and still disagree. All of those, except for Detroit, were well above what Figgins did this season.

his career obp is .345 with a career high of .352 which is within close range of every one of those listed.

So it's just assumed he'll get back to that level? I remember a few people assuming that Pierre's 2005 was a fluke and that he'd bounce back this year.

I actually view Figgins as an improvement over Pierre, but not by much. If he can be acquired for a reliever, that's great. However, none of that makes him a good leadoff hitter.
