Of the names being rumored, Carl Crawford is the player that intrigues me. He is very young with a tremendous upside of speed and power, bats left-handed, and is still cheap. He could be a mainstay for a decade in the OF. I realize an OF of Crawford, Murton, and Pie might not be perfect for 2007 contention, but it might be great for 2008-2015. I wonder which youngsters the Cubs would have to trade to get him.

Marshall, Gallagher and Mateo or something comparable is probably what I think Tampa would want in return. The negotiating may start with Hill.

I was trying to look for some ZiPS projections for Crawford for 07' when i found what his 06 one's where

AB H AVG HR RBI R

633 194 0.306 19 76 102

compared to his actual stats

AB H AVG HR RBI R

600 183 .305 18 77 89

I get chills about how close those two projections are.

does anyone have his 2007 projections?

In a word: A lot.

Okay, that's two words.

Per PECOTA, Crawford nailed his 60th percentile which was .306/.347/.478. If you're into this sort:

IMO it'll take Pie to get Crawford.

That would make very little sense considering that the reason why Tampa is even considering trading Crawford is to make room for their backlog of top-notch OF prospects.

I think they want pitching, room for their other OFers and future salary relief.

The reason TB has continued to suck is because their front office is clueless about how to negotiate trades. They ask for the world and more for anyone you want from their roster. Unfortunately, the Mets were stupid enough to send them Kazmir for Zambrano, which only makes them think they can do that sort of thing every time.

Good point. With BJ Upton likely playing 3b, Cedeno could have some appeal. I think they really want pitching. I can't think of any teams that will give up a front line starter for Crawford.

Renyel Pinto, Sergio Mitre and Ricky Nolasco for Crawford seems like a good deal. Oh, wait. Nevermind.

Marshall, Cedeno and Novoa is where I would start. They'll likely start with Hill, Marshall and Cedeno.

Crawford is definitely of interest to me.

Sean Marshall is a big bargaining chip to me. He's still very young, got a good amount of ML experience last year and showed flashes of greatness. He probably doesn't have a spot with the Cubs with Z, Prior, and Hill in the rotation and the likelihood the Cubs go out and get more SPs in order to compete very quickly. Also, you got Veal on his heels, so Marshall is a very valuable expendable part, IMO. They may have interest in Patterson if they figure out Cantu isn't all that good. 1B could be a position of interest too.

I agree with most they would ask for Hill first, but the Cubs could have a shot at Crawford and a minor league P by offering Marshall, Gallagher/Patterson, and Dopirak.

Would you take Pie for Crawford? IMO the Rays would be foolish to take anything less than Hill.

Pie as part of a package.

You mean Pie as the centerpiece, and a bunch of lesser prospects added in? If I ran the Rays I wouldn't take that. Crawford is an established MLB star, young, with a very attractive contract situation. I don't see why they would have to settle for anything less than Hill.

Maybe, I can never figure out Tampa when it comes to trades.

Unfortunately, the Cubs don't have too many prospects left to deal. I think the Pierre trade is going to be one of the worst on Hendry's record.

I agree. To deal that much talent to get Pierre w/o some sort of guarantee that he'll resign is risky at best. Middle of 2006 and I was wishing that Nolasco was still wearing Cubbie blue with all the injuries and poor performance of the starting staff.

I think both of these observations are irrelevant to the Crawford deal discussion. None of the prospects that went Florida for Pierre would have been enough of a centerpiece for Crawford.

The Devil Rays should command a very, very good pitcher in return for Crawford. A Kazmir level prospect.

As well as Nolasco pitched last year, I very much doubt he couldn't have been a good start for a Crawford deal.

he was repeating at double A and when brought up to triple A for a handfull of starts he stunk. I could be wrong but thats how I remember it at least.

He also threw a few balls in the majors.

With the benefit of hind-sight, sure. But that's not how it works. If Nolasco isn't traded to Florida, he gets only a fraction of the MLB experience. Maybe he folds under Dusty Baker's management, or gets hurt like all the rest of them.

It's difficult to say what could have been, but certainly Nolasco had more opportunities in Florida to mature than he would have in Chicago. Crawford should command an MLB elite pitching prospect, and it's not likely Nolasco is the prospect if still with the Cubs organization.

So you think they would take Veal and Marshall?

I thought my position was pretty clear :? . No, not a chance. As I mentioned a few times, a top-end MLB ready starter. There are only a handful in baseball and the Cubs have only one - Hill. I wouldn't make the deal, because the Cubs need pitching as much as hitting, even though I absolutely love Crawford.
