anyone else think he may be someone that hendry will target this offseason? we have a lot of the kind of players that loria goes for(see: cheap, young, cubs), and with the payroll going up coupled with the fact that the cubs would likely lose rich hill in a deal for a talented, unnamed shortstop, though it's purely speculation on my part it doesn't seem too far out of the realms of possibility.

 

obviously(jim and lou will understand me better if i pretense statements with this) willis has thrown A LOT of pitches in a very big ball park, but why not? bring him home and throw him in the number three spot, sandwiched between schmidt and prior.

That's how I think it's most likely to get ARod, a player I'd much rather have instead of Willis. I can't shake the feeling that he'll (D-Train) have significant DL time on his plate down the line.

i would co-sign that. rich hill is a comperable, cheaper option at this point. i guess i was resigned to the fact that he'd have to go to get rodriguez.

 

how would the deal work if you add florida to the rodriguez sweepstakes?

Spin some quality rookies down to the Marlins...you'd have to certainly involve at least one of Hill, Pie, Veal, Gallagher or Guzman...then spin Willis off to the Yanks. I'd toss in Eyre and see if they throw back Pavano, too.

ETA: something I often forget is tha Willis is only 24 years old. That's also something to consider (Hill is 26).

You basically answered it yourself. Willis is proven, and for a team like a Yankees, that makes all the difference in the world.

That's a bit misleading. Hills five years from free agency and Willis is only 2. That may not mean a lot for the Yankees, but any other teams it's a huge factor.

Yeah, the problem with that deal is the Marlins trading Willis for Gallagher + Ryu.

Cubs assume all the 16 million ARod is due on his contract. The Marlins would get two pitching prospects, although those can be moved around. They have a lot of pitching prospects so they may desire another position guy instead. The main spot the Marlins have an orgizational need in is centerfielders, and a guy like Felix Pie might be perfect for them in that position. My initial thoughts would have them interested in Matt Murton, but not sure what their intentions with Josh Willingham is.
