Oh, God. I think I'll drink the poison kool aid if Lou gets hired. It doesn't matter, if they don't spend the dough on pitching...it won't matter anyway.

Instead of spending the 4-5 million over 3 years to get Piniella hired you might as well save the cash for players and hire Girardi for 1/2 the cost.

Also from that article:

Possibly helping Steinbrenner decide to bring Torre back is that Lou Piniella is a serious candidate for the Cubs and Nationals jobs and that Steinbrenner didn't want to pay Torre $7 million to not work. The buzz around Yankee Stadium yesterday was that Piniella was close to an agreement with the Nationals but Alan Nero, Piniella's agent, denied that.

there may be hope yet . . .

I just read that Piniella already said he won't take the Nats job because they are rebuilding.

Piniella's comments about the Nationals job being a better fit for a younger manager have been widely interpreted as him ruling out that job in advance.

San Francisco Chronicle[/url]"]

Piniella's name has surfaced in all four cities with managerial openings. He confirmed he spoke to Washington Nationals GM Jim Bowden but decided that team is not a fit because it plans to rebuild with young players. Piniella has said he would return to managing only with an immediate contender.

"I'm about winning," he said. "I enjoy the winning aspect of managing a baseball game. That's what I enjoy. Where people are interested in winning, that's where my interest lies."

So hopefully that rules out the Cubs, too. We're nowhere near "winning."

It might point towards a Cubs team that is poised to collect as many veterans as possible to fill holes this year. A lot of people use winning as a euphemism for more 35 year olds on the bench.

If they expand their payroll and make the right moves in a under nourished NL, they have a shot next year....

Yeah right!

Maybe there's some kind of massive plot/conspiracy that'll ensure ARod comes to the Cubs as long as Lou gets the job.

Maybe the sky will be argyle when I wake up tomorrow.

So why in the world would he take the Cubs job? The Cubs were worse thant the Nationals last year.

Because baseball people, especially red-assed old school baseball people like Lou, equate winning with employing veterans.

Ahhh....it was fun while it lasted. Of course it probably was never going to happen, and one news report out of NY certainly doesn't constitute the final word, but to think that the only way the Cubs don't hire a guy like Lou is to fall bass ackwards into a legitimate candidate out the stupidity of another team is pretty darn depressing. Of course, once the other team(s) wake up out of the fog the Cubs are left standing there by themselves trying to figure out what the heck just happened and why everyone has left but them.

Is it too much to ask for an organization with just a little bit of foresight? It makes me mad b/c now it seems like Hendry is sick with the idea of a veteran "tough guy" presence in the club house since his own job is now on the line and he has to make up for all the childishness/lack of professionalism and utter disregard of baseball fundamentals the Cubs have displayed the past few years. He has backed himself into a corner after sticking with Dusty WAY too long, and now we all get to feel the brunt of that stupidity.

exactly. if little, fresh-faced ryan theriot is your middle infield backup, then you're rebuilding. now if wise, old neifi perez is your middle infield backup, then you're thinking world series.

ESPN is officially "Awaiting Joe Torre press conference".

YES Network just kicked off Mike and the Mad Dog, who are saying they "are not allowed to broadcast" the press conference.

Kurkijan on ESPN right now, YES Network is saying that Torre has told them he will be the manager next year. Kurkijan also says

A) Cubs don't look like a team that can jump into the playoffs next year, like the Nationals, so Piniella wouldn't be a good fit

B)Not sure if front office really wants Girardi

Posted

if you don't want piniella, you better root hard against detroit this postseason...because if hendry sees a team win the world series with a crotchety old manager, by golly he's going to do his best to emulate that team.

which brings up a good question...knowing that hendry likes to (badly) impersonate the most recent world series winner, who should cub fans be pulling for?
