A great ambassador for the game has passed.

Link.

Buck O'Neil, baseball's charismatic Negro Leagues ambassador who barnstormed with Satchel Paige and inexplicably fell one vote shy of the Hall of Fame, died Friday night. He was 94.

Bob Kendrick, marketing director for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, said O'Neil died at a Kansas City hospital.

It's a shame he didn't make it into the Hall of Fame while alive. It will be an indictment on voters when he makes it in post-humously.

He missed by 1 vote -- everyone that left him off their ballot should be ashamed of themselves.

RIP Buck O'Neil

Agreed. I hope they don't do the same thing to Ron Santo.

I really liked O'Neil's recollections in Ken Burns' Baseball miniseries.

The Negro Leagues could not have asked for a better ambassador.

I hope I never cross paths with those who voted "no" for his inclusion into the HOF.

Very sad day. Luckily on the ballot he was left off a white woman was voted in for her role in the negro leagues. Once again baseball hits a homerun.
