Bud Black interviewed with the Giants yesterday, becoming the third candidate. The Giants have interviewed three candidates, Black, Wotus, and Piniella.

Link.

Los Angeles Angels pitching coach Bud Black interviewed for the Giants' managerial opening in Arizona on Wednesday, major-league sources said, becoming the third confirmed candidate to discuss the job formally with general manager Brian Sabean.

Sabean also interviewed Giants bench coach Ron Wotus and Lou Piniella, who pulled himself out of consideration and signed a contract to manage the Chicago Cubs.

Of special note, it appears even amidst all the speculation, Brenly has yet to interview for the Giants job.

It also looks like Bochy is on the Giants' radar.

The Giants still plan to speak with San Diego Padres manager Bruce Bochy and New York Mets third-base coach Manny Acta, who said Wednesday he will fly to Dallas on Friday to interview with the Texas Rangers. Acta said he had not heard from the Giants, but a club source said that merely is a logistical issue

Manny Acta interviewed with the Rangers on Friday.

Acta, 37, was the third to interview for the job created by Buck Showalter's dismissal earlier this month. Oakland third base coach Ron Washington and Philadelphia minor league manager John Russell interviewed earlier in the week.

The Rangers also will interview Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters manager Trey Hillman when his team is through with the Japan Series championship and bench coach Don Wakamatsu.

Washington plans to interview Acta.

Several sources with knowledge of the search -- all speaking on the condition of anonymity because the Nationals are insisting the talks be held in private -- said that the search will continue this week when the team interviews New York Mets third base coach Manny Acta, at least the seventh candidate with which the club has spoken about the vacancy. What's more: One source said the Nationals likely will speak to more candidates after Acta's interview.

Cooper, Cora, and Baker, however, appear to now be out of the running.

Sources said that two of the interviewees -- Houston bench coach Cecil Cooper and Chicago White Sox third base coach Joey Cora -- are out of the running, a development first reported by MLB.com. Another, former Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker, said he has not heard from Bowden in awhile, and he appears to be, at best, an outside shot. Lou Piniella, a manager with four different clubs who has close ties to Bowden, spoke to the Nationals but instead took the Cubs job.

Girardi withdrawls his name from consideration for the Washington job.

"I was very impressed, very impressed with Jim and Stan, the organization, the new stadium, the Lerners," Girardi said in a telephone interview. "I think it's a great ownership group, and the situation is going to be very good. I think it's a wonderful job. But I think I came to the conclusion at this time that it's not the right move for my family."

It's starting to appear that no one wants to manage the Nationals, as now Terry Pendleton has pulled his name from consideration as well.

Atlanta Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton took himself out of consideration for the Washington Nationals' managing job, further whittling the pool of prospective candidates to replace Frank Robinson.

Pendleton declined to comment when reached by phone last night. Earlier in the day, he told MLB.com: "I thought my obligations at this time are to the Braves. I knew that they really wanted me back and I didn't think it was fair to keep them on a string."

I look for Girardi to sit out the year as a broadcaster, take the Marlins money, and then take over the Yankees job next year when Torre retires.

The NY media and fan base have moved past Girardi and are focusing on Mattingly right now.

Unless the Yankees win it all next year, Torre's not going to leave NYC a hero. I can't see one of "his boys" taking over in that kind of situation.

It looks like Hershiser will beinterviewing with the A's.

The A's have lined up former Texas pitching coach Orel Hershiser to interview for their manager's position. Hershiser, 48, had an informal interview by phone with Oakland last fall during the brief span the manager's job was open before Ken Macha returned; this time, he will interview in person at the A's complex in Phoenix the week after next.

Bud Black, Bob Geren, and Ron Washington are also candidates for the position.

UK will be jealous. The A's have some nice choices by the looks of it.

The Giants have now formally asked for permission to talk to Bochy. Some believe this is a sign he's a front-runner for the job.

The Giants on Wednesday formally asked the San Diego Padres for permission to interview Bruce Bochy for their managerial opening, a sign that he has emerged as a front-runner for the job.

Bochy, who has managed the Padres for 12 seasons and guided them to the 1998 National League pennant, and NL West titles the past two seasons, already has spoken to Giants general manager Brian Sabean informally, and it was unclear when they might talk again.

Colorado bench coach Jamie Quirk has been added to the list of candidates in Oakland.

Quirk, who will meet with A's general manager Billy Beane in Phoenix next week, was scheduled to interview last fall when Oakland held an abbreviated manager search, but he did not get a chance to talk to the team because Ken Macha returned to his former position as the A's manager.

Quirk, 52, spent 18 seasons as a utility player in the big leagues, including three-plus seasons with Oakland, where he was briefly a teammate of Beane's in 1989. Quirk has been the Rockies' bench coach since October 2002; before that, he was a coach with the Royals for eight years and with the Rangers for one season.

It appears that Bochy may be the top choice in San Francisco and the Padres have given the Giants a seven-day window to work out a deal.

Link.

The Giants and Bruce Bochy have determined that their interest in each other is genuine.

So Giants General Manager Brian Sabean on Wednesday called Kevin Towers, his Padres counterpart, and received the official sanction to open talks with San Diego's longtime manager.

Sabean will meet with Bochy in the next 48 hours and there are indications he will offer the job if he senses the 51-year-old former catcher is enthusiastic about moving north. Towers conceded he already has formed a list of preliminary candidates to replace Bochy, who is under contract to manage the Padres in 2007.

Sabean has until noon Tuesday to make a decision on Bochy; the Padres are not willing to extend the seven-day window.

It also appears that the Padres will not ask for compensation if the Giants want to hire Bochy.

Towers said the Padres have not demanded compensation if the Giants hire Bochy. A Giants source said such a demand is unlikely at this stage.
