That'll do it.

Despite what they're saying, I don't think it was solely performance related. The guy was hitting 3rd in the lineup yesterday and got yanked in the 8th with the tying runs on base for a PH. That's a little odd to me.

He was 0-3 with 2 Ks. The only odd part was batting him 3rd.

I agree that it was odd to bat him third. But do you really make decisions based on 3 ABs? If he was good enough to bat 3rd at the start of the game, those 3 ABs convinced Leyland he should be PH for with a rookie with the game on the line? That's odd. If DLee was in the same situation and was 0/3 on the day, do we PH w/ Coats? Even Dusty wouldn't do that. Something else was going on. My guess is DD caught wind of something during the game and told Leyland to yank him in his next AB and then cut him after the game.

No, you don't make a decision on 3 AB's -- you make a decision on a full year of lackluster play. Play that was getting progressively worse. If DLee starts a tailspin in his career that results in him playing like Dmitri, then I have no problem with him being pulled for a PH. Unless the only option is Buck Coats.

I agree that he was bad for most of the year. But it's not likely that Leyland woke up in the 8th and said "wow, DY sucks...Hooper - you're in." Just a bit odd to me.

The big question is do the Cubs wait until the offseason to pick him up off of the scrap heap, or do they just do it now and let him take Murton's at bats the rest of the year?

 devil face because it wouldn't surprise me...

Lest we also forget the Tigers also have Casey and Shelton at first/ DH and Granderson, Thames, Monroe, and Ordonez in the OF. It seemed like a logjam, and he wasn't going to get much playing time. Also, IIRC, he's due to earn about $8-9 mil next year, which is an awful lot for a bench player.

Club had a $7m option for next year according to Cot's. DFA'ing him didn't save them any money, they still have to pay the remainder of this year's contract.

Jim Hendry is dancing in the halls of the Tribune building.

This will be his marquee dumpster diving signing for 07.

Hendry won't sign Dmitri Young to be a starter. He might sign him as a pinch hitter/bench player but that would hardly be considered a marquee signing.

His numbers since coming back haven't been bad. I'm sure this is more than just performance related.

Since returning from the injury/personal issues...

33 games, 292/331/504/835, 7 HR

Sean Casey's numbers since coming to the Tigers...

32 games, 236/270/336/606, 2 HR

There's something more going on here. Whether he's been disruptive in the clubhouse or has more off the field problems, there's no way that he couldn't have been at the very least a very good power bat off the bench - and the numbers suggest he should've been starting over Casey.

From the looks of it, there had to be something else going on.

Leyland bats Neifi in the leadoff spot - I wouldn't be suprised at any lineup he might write out.

Per Rotoworld:

Dmitri Young-DH- Tigers Sep. 8 - 7:18 am et

According to a Detroit News source, Dmitri Young was released by the Tigers because he was a "growing cancer."

The source described Young as "someone who cared too much about himself, and not enough about the team." The official party line in Detroit is that Young was cut for performance-related issues, but that's hard to swallow given that he hit over .290 since returning in July.

I guess this answers our questions about why he was released. What's the over/under as to when our boy Hendry gobbles him up?

Well, with that news, there is no way Hendry picks him up. Hendry is a big believer in chemistry, and would be very reluctant to bring in a "growing cancer"

Update!

From Rotoworld:

Dmitri Young-DH- Tigers Sep. 14 - 9:51 am et

Dmitri Young has reportedly decided not to play for another team this season.

Young was released by the Tigers earlier this month, reportedly because he had become a problem in the clubhouse. Expect him to get plenty of chances next season, because he can still hit.
