The volume on the criticism is so high now, the attacks so personal that you wonder what the guy has done to possibly bring this on. And if you don't jump on board the Hate Train, there's something not quite right about you. You're certainly not a tough guy. Tough guys chew up people like Baker and spit them out.

That seems pretty ridiculous.

These are the reasons Morrissey defends Dusty?

Could the majority be right and we in the minority be wrong? Of course. There's room for that, at least on this end. But the other side doesn't want to hear a defense of Baker. It doesn't want to hear about a team that has been decimated by injuries. It doesn't want to hear that Hendry's failure to acquire starting pitchers is the true reason this franchise has stumbled the past two seasons. It doesn't want to hear about the misguided decision to give closer Ryan Dempster a three-year, $15.5 million contract extension last fall.

That's just shifting blame - Dusty has his faults and shouldn't be here next season. Hendry has his faults and there is a vocal contingent who want Hendry fired too.

If you're a man and you don't think Baker is the cause of the Cubs' woes, then you have had your manhood questioned. If you're a woman with similar thoughts, you haven't had your womanhood questioned, and I can't tell you why that is.

Nice strawman Morrissey has constructed here. I've noticed a similar sleight of hand from other Dusty defenders (admittedly, a rare breed) I've come across: the implication that the anti-Dusty position is that Dusty is sole reason for the Cubs' woes this season. Makes it easy for a guy like Morrissey.

I say Jim Leyland couldn't have made a winner out of this clump of mediocrity.

Um Morrissey, a critique of Dusty does not equal a defense of the front office. It's actually very unfortunate that Dusty is such an awful manager and has become such a lightning rod. It takes the heat off of Jim Hendry and the front office. Still it amuses me that the only defense of Dusty that a guy like Morrissey can muster is that the team sucks therefore Dusty isn't to blame and should be retained.

There's really no defending the managerial job Dusty has done.

But on this I agree with Morrissey: the attacks on Dusty have been more personal, more insulting than I remember with other managers who were being run out of town.

I love having the Tribune foist this trainwreck upon Cubs fans, then criticize us as being ill-informed brutes (and maybe just a wee bit racist?) in their paper. That's awesome.

If anyone cares, here's my blog entry on what I think of Morrisey's column.

I also had one about Bob Verdi's idiotic comments about Cub fans not wanting Joe Girardi to become manager because he's impatient. Now that Fla is over .500 and more of a threat than ever to make the playoffs, that may be a moot point anyway.

Quite frankly, as a Cub fan, I'm tired of being mocked by the media, especially when they write for the Trib.

You got some good stuff in your blog

You senile old goat, as a Cub fan, I don't care if he personally tells Dennis Fitzsimmons to go f** himself. I believe he would be the perfect man to manage the Cubs.

 That's hillarious.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Someday I hope to figure out how to copy and paste quotes properly

Yeah, but I can't recall a manager who consistently provides so much material. Morrissey pretty much got it right on at least this account...

Every day, he is asked questions about his future, and every day he answers them. His responses are all over the board. More pickings for his critics. What used to be considered quaint about Baker—his willingness to talk on a number of different topics—now is considered the ramblings of a befuddled manager.

True. I don't know, maybe it's because I knew this season was going nowhere back in March----at this point the Dusty crusade is over for me, and has been for quite some time.

I've been staring at his corpse for 6 months now (figuratively). There's only so much time one can spend at a wake.

Yes, he's bad. Yes, he's mad. That's why Hendry should be receiving much more condemnation that he is for keeping the lout around. He knows it, too. He knows everything-----Jimbo just doesn't give a damn, and lacks the spine to make a move midstream.
