I say no but that they will finish below .400 (98 losses) and among the top seven all-time worst Cub teams.

From Barry Rozner in today's Daily Herald

Worst ever

The Cubs are on pace to finish 65-97, but as they continue to search for a bottom, they have a chance to place themselves among the worst teams in the 130-year history of the franchise.

The 1962 and 1966 Cubs both finished 59-103, for a .364 winning percentage, the worst in team annals. The current Cubs would have to finish 4-25 to break that mark.

However, only seven Cubs teams since 1876 have finished a baseball season with a winning percentage of less than .400, though in fairness, 1980 under Preston Gomez shouldn’t even count as a baseball season.

Nevertheless, the magic number for finishing under .400 is 98 defeats, meaning the Cubs would have to go 10-19 to fall below the Gomez Line, and that seems absolutely possible after getting swept in Pittsburgh.

Judging on

lack of common sense

total of money spent

yes this team is the worst ever

Yep.

from the:

GM

to

Coach

Players

It's by far the worst ever.

Starting to look like they might do it. Only have to go 4 - 20 to tie for worst record ever.

Seem like a lock to finish under under .400 - have to finish 9 - 15 or worse.

What free agent would want to come to this pathetic franchise?

the difference is that we have a gm who put this team together and REALLY THOUGHT THEY WOULD WIN...back then they just grabbed some guys and went to play... at 39 there have been very few cubs teams that were put together with the idea that they would contend.the best i can say is taht we had a few that had a chance to contend if everything went exactly right for us!

It is amazing how one man can manage, within 4 years, one the franchises WORST and BEST teams. I honestly wonder if Dusty Baker spent this season trying to get fired.

Baker had tremendous help from Hendry, though.

But I would never call the 2003 team one of the best Cub teams. They got extremely lucky to win the division....er ..... I mean they got lucky that Houston lost the division.

I disagree. Everything was covered with that team: Starting pitching, good defense, strong bench, solid lineup with power AND a leadoff man. Bad breaks doomed them. That team was solid.

"Was" the key word.

As Wood and Prior fell from grace, Hendry refused to look towards a backup plan.

The power in the OF of Sosa and Alou was never replaced

The leadoff man(Lofton) was let go but they failed to realize CPatt should

not leadoff. They refused to get a leadoff guy at another position.

Hendry has been swining and missing for the past 3 years, including keeping an incompentant manager around.

All failures need to be blamed on Hendry.

Baker makes a bad coaching move, I blame Hendry. Dusty only exists

now as the manager because of Hendry

Hendry bears the responsability of how the team does in a year. Hendry is horrible, and is the reason we're probably going to finish last in the NL.

Baker bears the responsibility of how the team does on a daily basis. He's given a team each day, and told to go out and win that day with that team. A better Manager would win more with less than Baker's been given.

Hendry has lost us many games by giving Baker a bad team. Baker has lost us many games by using the bad team incorrectly.

Combined, they've lost more than either would on their own, becuase their weaknesses reinforce each other.

It's all very frustrating.
