Dude, went 5 for 6. White boy needs his rest tomorrow. Bynum's black. He can hit and swing no matter what, because they are used to being overworked. or something.

Just curious, why do you prefer Theriot to Bynum so much? They are the same age and neither is truly a prospect anyway.

I don't like his defense, I'll admit Theriot's better defensively. My point is, why is Theriot a prospect and Bynum is not?

Theriot was the much better minor league hitter, in addition to being the superior defender.

He had done nothing but impressed me since he has been up with the Cubs. He plays hard, he hits the ball, and he plays good defense. I would rather see Theriot playing second every day then Cedeno or at least switch them off when Izturis gets back.

Well, neither is really a prospect. Theriot is 26 and is a minor-league ecksteinish player with versatility and solid defense and Bynum just sucks.

Right. Theriot has the ceiling of a utility player. Bynum's is less than that, also known as someone not good enough to play in the major leagues.

Theriot may have been a little better but "much better" is an overstatement. Here are their numbers:

Bynum- career .275 BA .347 OBP .363 SLG .710 OPS

2000-A age 20 .256BA, .335OBP, .310SLG, .645OPS

2001-High A age 21 .261 .329 .350 .679

2002-High A age 22 .306 .385 .390 .775

2003-AA age 23 .263 .344 .363 .707

2004-age 24 AA-.268 .332 .358 .690

AAA- .283 .339 .364 .703

2005-AAA age 25 .278 .347 .384 .731

Theriot- career .265 BA .355 OBP .331 SLG .686 OPS

2001-High A age 21 .204 .343 .252 .595

2002-A age 22 .252 .335 .313 .648

2003-age 23 A-.259 .353 .318 .671

2004-High A age 24 .273 .367 .342 .709

2005-AA age 25 .304 .365 .391 .756

So, Theriot had a better OBP, Bynum a better SLG. Bynum put up his numbers at a younger age/higher level than Theriot. Again, why is Theriot a prospect and Bynum is not? I don't understand.

How do similar minor league numbers equate to different projections for each player? I think both could be utility players but Theriot maybe a little more valuable (almost completely because of defense).

If it makes you feel any better, I don't care much for either one.

I love seeing Theriot do well. I think he could be an Eckstein-level player in MLB. There's no question that Cedeno has a higher ceiling and more physical gifts than Ryan. But...what can I say...I like guys who have more BB + HBP than K's in their minor league careers. Especially when it comes with stellar defense in the MIF and a little bit of speed.

But let's not go too crazy in expectations for him based on a hot streak.

Gee, do you think playing in three of the friendliest leagues for hitters (Cali, Texas, and PCL) had anything to do with Bynum's higher SLG?

Maybe, I don't really like Bynum that much. Just trying to figure out why Theriot is so much better.

Heh, while Theriot got a good 2.5 seasons in the SL and FSL.

I agree with most of that. I like Theriot well enough but don't think it's that great a deal if Bynum starts some games.

So why play Bynum every day? Lets see what Theriot can do.

I agree Theriot should play, but so should Bynum. I prefer a platoon with them so that both get some playing time.

Part of what depresses Theriot's numbers is a failed, two year experiment in switch hitting. Once he went back to hitting exclusively right handed, his numbers improved rapidly and he moved up through the system faster.

aside from numbers...watching Bynum on the field at times.he is braindead out there.

From getting picked off first by a righty with an average move, brutal baserunning, and miscues at 2B, he exhibits stupidity on the field. He is simply a guy who is athletic trying to play baseball. Trying...the key word.

Ok, Bynum's not great, I agree, but neither is Theriot. I'm willing to give both the benefit of the doubt in a crap season to find out for sure who can play and who can't though.
