I think something else to consider is that relegating Cedeno to utility infielder next year does not necessarily constitute giving up on him.

This is true.

If the Cubs upgrade at 2B, Cedeno can go to the bench in 2007, but take over the full time SS gig in 2008 when Izturis is gone.

This is probably not true. Hendry is probably going to try and keep Izturis around as long as possible.

You may be right about that. I hope not. Maybe Hendry will be gone by then.

I'm guessing that an equally poor 2007 season will mean Hendry is canned before 2008 (Andy may be gone by then as well). But anything around .500 or better and Jim will get all of 2008 as well, and he'll have to sign or get rid of Izturis before the 2008 season.

Just curious where your optimism lies with the possibility of MacPhail and Hendry being gone by 2008. The fact that MacPhail didn't fire Lynch, who was, at best, equally pathetic as Hendry, gives me no hope that MacPhail will fire Hendry even with a bad 2007. If MacPhail is not here, then I could see it. I just want to be as optimistic as you.

Bump. Ron Ce really stinks. Let's see more of Theriot, instead. I mean, Theriot DOES play SS, yes??

He plays SS very well, actually.

Exactly. Tell me what Theriot has NOT shown in his brief time in the big leagues that doesn't suggest he deserves a nice long look at SS in September, especially with Izturis on the DL. We know what Cedeno has to offer at this point. If you were a smart organization (and we know the Cubs are not), wouldn't you want to know if Theriot can be your utility middle infielder in 2007--at the major league minimum salary, no less??

Compared to Cedeno, looks to me like Theriot is a better hitter, a much better baserunner, and a steadier defensive player, too. He has no power, but then, neither does Cedeno.

I just don't understand the Cubs. Play the kid and find out what he's got.

That is exactly what I would do. At this point, I would assume he could do the job until he proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he cannot. A guy like that is going to at least match the production Neifi would give you (without the threat of the manager playing him all the time).

For a quick second, I thought you were referring to, and misspelled, Ron Cey

When Theriot was as old as Cedeno is this year, he split the year between Lansing(.259/.353/.318/.671) and West Tennessee(.236/.351/.270/.621). Cedeno is(or should be viewed as) the more valuable commodity. However, for the purposes of being a middle infielder, Theriot being more advanced works to his advantage, so hopefully someone will see Cedeno's big helping of tools and potential and he can help bring in a more valuable player.

Again, Theriot has no power, but I see an OBP over .350 both of those years, compared to Cedeno's abysmal .270. And Theriot has been a better basestealer too, no? (Sorry, can't find his minor league SB stats)

If you sent Cedeno down to AA I think you'd see him put up pretty good overall production. Even moreso if you started him at Peoria. But that's not the point. What I'm getting at is overall, Cedeno is the better asset, but Theriot fits our immediate needs better.

Theriot in his minor league career was 115 for 154 in stolen bases, 74.6%. He seems to have alternated between real good and real bad in different seasons.

I was actually going to start a thread about this because I don't understand. Is Cedeno viewed as the better player just because he is younger? That seems to be the only explanation for it. If that is the case who cares?

I hope that Hendry is not foolish enough to go into next year with Cedeno starting anywhere. Bruce had a comment in his article that Cedeno's VORP was one of the worst in all of baseball and I just can't stand to watch him out there much more. Tonight was no exception.
