It was a fluke. Not only did Van der Sar slip when he was coming out when, like TT said, he probably would have gotten to the ball, but the ball hit off of the back of a Man U defender (Rio, I think) and right down for Lampard. You're kidding yourself if you don't think that goal was lucky.

I think Van Der Sar gets to that ball pretty easily if he didn't slip and fall down.

It wouldn't have been easy. Slipping on a pitch doesn't make it a fluke. Slipping on a dry pitch maybe.

Feilhaber injured himself in yesterday's u-23 match vs Turkey and has been replaced by Mo Edu in England. I'd rather see Edu get a showcase in England anyway.

According to a local newspaper, US youth international Jared Jeffrey will sign with Club Brugge on 06/14 (the day of his 18th birthday, apparantly the first day he can do so).

Way to celebrate: signing a pro contract. 8-)

Bocanegra released by Fulham

U.S. national team defender Carlos Bocanegra is looking for a new team.

To the surprise of nobody, Fulham manager released Bocanegra, making him one of eight players let go by the Cottagers on Friday.

With American goalkeeper Kasey Keller looking likely to depart, Bocanegra's departure coupled with Brian McBride's possible departure from Fulham could leave the Cottagers with just two Americans, Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson.

Bocangra's departure ends a tumultuous period at the club for him. He went from regular starter and captain to unused substitute by year's end, which made his release a foregone conclusion.

So where will Bocanegra go now? A reunion with Chris Coleman and Conventry is not in the cards, a source close to Bocanegra told me recently. Bocanegra has drawn considerable interest, both in England and other European countries (including the Netherlands).

I wouldn't mind seeing Boca in the Eredivisie if it's with a club playing in Europe. I'd love to see him in Spain.

Well it happened. Avram Grant got fired. Good things.

In other news.

U.S. national team midfielder DaMarcus Beasley made the most of his first start since recovering from knee surgery by scoring a goal and delivering the game-winning assist in Glasgow Rangers' 3-2 Scottish Cup final victory against Queen of the South on Saturday.

And yes, the performance came on his 26th birthday.

Beasley started and played 76 minutes for Rangers, making his first start since returning from knee surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered in Champions League action last November. He played a part in all three Rangers goals. He drew the foul that set up the free kick that led to Rangers' opening goal, scored his own goal by tapping home an errant header, and delivered a corner kick headed home by Kris Boyd in the 72nd minute.

Beasley's performance should help U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley make his decision on whether to start Beasley agains England on Wednesday. There were some concerns about hwo far along he was in his recovery, but Saturday's performance has put most of those concerns to rest.

What do you think of the news that Beasley is back and playing well? Share your thoughts below.

The Fire are pounding NY. It's 5-0 in the 66th minute. They've scored 4 times in the first 17 minutes of the 2nd half.

That was a ridiculous game. Dominating road performance to say the least.

Jozy had a nice header for NYRB's only goal. Chicago's central defense is awesome. Those two guys could anchor a back line in Europe and both probably will some day.

Yeah, it was a nice header, but the defender on the post wasn't paying attention. I don't think it should have gone in.

Yeah. Well, when Chad Barret is marking you, it's time to do some work.

That was a very nice, difficult angle for Jozy to put it in from.

"If you can't match [England's] energy, you have no chance in the game," Donovan said. "Then you calculate the quality of their players, and that makes it another level, and then you also calculate that those players, if not all, play in what I consider to be the best league in the world. So they've got a lot of factors going for them. That being said, there are still a lot of players that played for Poland and Switzerland who play in good teams and are talented and if we approach it the same way, we think we can win."

So join them.

I can't give too much info just yet, but I understand that Donovan is looking to make some upgrades to his home. I wish I could say it was a home overseas but I don't know much yet outside of that we are probably going to be getting the project. It helps that we also did one of Beckham's homes over in Europe, again I don't know which. Stupid confidentiality agreements ;-).

Well of course, now that his wife is making CBS money and not WB money, they can afford to add on.

Yeah that was part of the discussion when I mentioned he needed to head over to Europe regardless. People here actually thought MLS would pay better than Europe. Either way I don't care about her career :-).

She is really hot but one of the worst actresses on tv.

I think the actor she is engaged to on that show is worse, but yeah she sucks. Though Patrick Warburton, David Spade, and Megan Price are great.

Except that no, it wasn't a fluke. It was terrible defending by Vidic and Rio.

Vidic got a piece of the ball and it deflected off of Rio's back right into the path of Lampard, and that's not a fluke?

I wish Ronaldo would just put his PKs in the side netting instead of his stop-and-go routine. However, of his 3 PK misses this year, two have been wide and only Cech (and his face, and possibly his tangerine pajamas) kept him out legitimately, so I can't be too bothered by it.

Typical Ronaldo arrogance thinking he can A) break the rules and B) continue with a terrible technique even though he has missed more pk's in a season than he should in a career.

It's one thing for a keeper to get lucky and stone you, but to flat out miss 3 times in a season is bush league and entirely unacceptable for the world's best player. But yeah, go ahead and blame the pink shirt; I'm sure Ronaldo is.

I thought you were talking about Ronaldo's arrogance but you seemed to have a shot at me there at the end. I was joking about Cech's kit, it's horrible but I'm not blaming it for Ronaldo's miss.

Ronaldo flat out missed twice, not three times. However, I am going to admit that I was mistaken about one thing: Both of his misses were without the pause. I couldn't remember the technique he used and just assumed both were the stop-and-go that is more common for him. That's wrong, both were straight run-ups. The stop-and-go still makes me more nervous, though.

That's just football. Goals like that happen all the time. Lucky, I guess, I just don't like people discounting them as if they shouldn't have happened.

Completely agree that that's just football, I'm not saying it shouldn't have happened just that Utd could've been 3-0 up early on, just like Chelsea could've been 3-1 up at FT.

I understand your mood, re-hashing a CL final lost on PKs obviously isn't ideal. Thanks for the quick responses, I'm not on here daily and sometimes I feel like you guys are probably done talking about some of the things I come here to comment on.

I think pretty much everyone here is ready to talk about all matches past, present, and future. Given this thread is 152 pages long only a few of us using it says something ;-).

Anyways US/England tomorrow, follow by Euro's in the very near future :amen:

Donovan is questionable for tomorrow with groin tightness. If this means Adu plays, then it could be a blessing in disguise. If it means Josh Wolff plays, it means I am unhappy.

Why does Wolff even have a passport to leave this country? I would like to see Donovan play, and not even come back to the states after the match. Well he can come back to play against Argentina, but thats it.
