After todays game, it's clear to see the value of Phil Nevin coming off the bench for the Cubs. If the Cubs can keep both Mabry and Nevin around next year, they'll have the beginnings of a good looking bench for the first time in a while. Add Neifi, Blanco, Pagan and Bynum/Theriot/Fontenot and the Cubs should be relatively well protected against injuries to major players.

I'm actually one of those people that would like to see the Cubs bring in Carlos Lee or someone else with more power for left field and let Jones and Murton platoon in right. If that should happen, a bench of Nevin, Mabry, Murton/Jones, Perez, Pagan or Bynum and Blanco would be extremely strong.

Mabry has been downright bad this year. Nevin might work coming off the bench, but as he ages his inability to be anything but a 1B would concern me, especially since we have a RH first baseman. And that suggested bench wouldn't be all that strong at all. It has 2 okay hitters in Jones/Murton and Nevin, one (relative) unknown in Pagan, and the rest are offensive black holes.

I wouldn't mind Nevin at all if he was cheap to come off the bench and bring us some power. Question is, would be agree to be a bench player....in the past he has been rather upset when not playing everyday.

Edit: And yes, Mabry is bad bad bad. He's alright defensively, and seems to be a smart player, but his bat speed is WAY down.

I have a Classic sports card with Phil Nevin, Shaq, Desmond Howard and that chic who played goalie. I know this has nothing to do with this topic but for some reason I just thought of it.

There's little reason to resign Blanco especially for what he's making now. Geo Soto should do fine as back-up catcher.

I'm in favor of Nevin off the bench if he'll sign for that role. Lee is much in the mold of Pierre where he wants to and had the capability of going 162 games, but I think for the Cubs best interests he should be getting days off next year.

i never have any worries about out bench because hendry is in love with veteren bench players...

he just loves to over pay for them.

And start them

Mannon Rheume or something.

I would love back next year in a role off the bench, if he comes to camp knowing that role hopefully he can get some reps behind the plate and at third base and left field. It would be nice to know we have a third string catcher that we can run out there for a few games that can hit.

Doesn't Nevin carry the "clubhouse cancer" tag? I've read that San Deigo and Texas staff and players were thrilled to see him go...

He complained constantly about his lack of playing time in Texas and SD, from all accounts.

And Bruce has made mention of the fact that he's very antagonistic with the media, often berating younger players for talking with reporters.

Wow I had no idea. Maybe he'll come to his senses and realize his productive starting days in MLB are over.

I would like Nevin on the bench, but I can't see him accepting the salary that should be offered for such a player. He probably thinks he should start and get paid accordingly. Mabry? Definitely not. He offers nothing of value.

Agreed. I'm disappointed in Mabry. I realized he wouldn't be as productive as he was in his prime, but the dropoff was much, much worse than I thought it would be.

Hendry signs them, Baker starts them.

C. Wilson is a much better pickup (plus he can form the platoon of doom with Jones).

exactly, almost word for word minus "of doom," what I was going to say. and he too can be a third catcher.
