If the Bears won't give up a second round pick for Deion Branch, they are fools.

Is Branch really all that good individually, or is he the beneficiary of being in a great system on a great team? I really don't know. His numbers sure aren't impressive, averaging about 700 yards and 3.5 TDs per season.

But is it just the pick, or aren't they going to probably have to renegotiate his contract too? I mean, isn't that why Branch is upset? So they have to pay him like a free agent AND give up a second round pick? I think that's where Angelo is balking...

I read $6m per year, which is essentially MM money, which is like paying two #2's number 1 money.

The window for this team is in the short term especially while the teams in the NFC North are in uber-rebuilding mode. They have to go for it now. Briggs is going to be a FA soon, the secondary is going to get expensive and or bad soon (Tillman, Vash looking for new contracts?), MB on the decline. There is a lot of reason for concern. If they could add another weapon on the offensive side for this season, especially at WR, they put themselves near the class of Carolina and Seattle for a shot at the Superbowl.

The Patriots are asking for two first-round draft picks in exchange for WR Deion Branch, according to a report on WIP in Philadelphia.

If they were to release Branch, well then ok...then maybe you pay that thinking this is our window, lets get it done. But throwing the pick on top. Too much.

And if anyone thinks that is going to happen, they are fooling themselves. A second round pick is reasonable.

I'd give him a second for him. 2 firsts? Uh, no thanks.

I'd quite possibly even give a 1st (not 2), considering the fact that if all goes as we hope, we'll be picking in the late 20's or early 30's in April. Plus, Angelo does his best work in the later rounds.

I think what it really comes down to is that the Pats really don't want to trade him. They're just letting Branch see what the market is for him out there so that he'll ultimately sign a reasonable contract with them.

Exactly. 1 1st is too much for such receiver, 2 is absurd. They're just playing nice while trying to keep him.

Thirded. It's all a little dance.

I'd love to get Branch. But I don't want him and Moose. Like Goony said, Moose is a #2 WR. Branch is a borderline #1 at best. I don't want to pay 2 #2's like #1's.

Well Grossman looked SO much sharper on those first two series. Currie had 2 catchable balls that he didn't come up with though. I think Davis ends up as the #2 receiver.

Currie is FAST... If he can cut down the drops (and Grossman gets used to having a receiver who runs THAT fast), he is going to add the deep threat we've been looking for. Don't know if he has the hands or mindset to go over the middle, but at least we've got someone to stretch the field with now and then.

No way is Davis the #2 WR. Berrian has a ton of talent and has shown flashes in the regular season. Same with Bradley. I think Davis is the #4, but will see a ton of playing time.

After tonight I think he's in serious danger of being cut. Remember, we'll only keep 5 WRs:

Moose

Berrian

Bradley

Davis

Gage or Currie

I think Gage should and will get cut...could be wrong, though.

Banedon, can you give a lil PBP since Jon isn't around? Danke!

Sorry about that Raisin. The good parts were over by the time you posted anyways... :P

I'm feeling much better about our WR after yesterday, although I think both Currie and Gage better be worried today.

Grossman looked great. I think his passer rating was in the 130 area.

Griese only had one series, but didn't get much done because he was getting a lot of pressure from the left side.

The first team defense had two 3 and outs to start. And the front four was getting pressure.

Overall I'm feeling much much better about the Bears today.

At this point, I'd rather keep Currie than Gage. IMO, Gage brings almost nothing to the table.

More ESPN lies, this time from TMQ:

Offensive performance did not change much when Rex Grossman stepped in, and both quarterbacks finished the season with identically bad 59.7 passer ratings. Now Brian Griese takes over, and though he is a career 79.6 passer, last season he threw as many interceptions as touchdown passes. Maybe that's what drew the Bears to him.

My thoughts from the game:

- Grossman looked good. He seemed confident and made good throws. He should have had that second touchdown.

- The D-line looked great today. No sacks but they put lots of pressure on the QB and gave some punishing hits. Tank in particular was getting tons of pressure on the QB.

- Ian Scott's return was also a boost in the run defense. Scott is so underrated.

- Rookie DE Jamal Green also showed some flashes. He made some good moves and put pressure on the QB.

- Leon Joe was all over the field yet again. Jerry once said that cutting this guy was the biggest mistake he's ever made as a GM and I think we're starting to see why.

- The starting running game was disappointing. No holes were opened for Jones. P.J. Pope looked good late in the game. He'll probably get signed to the practice squad. Hopefully no one snatches him up.

- I really think Currie will make the team. He was getting consistently open last night and he looked very explosive. I really see no point in keeping Gage over Currie. Gage brings nothing to the team that Moose doesn't already provide.

- Devin Hester looks great in the return game. Not only is he fast, but he is very quick. He was a step away from breaking that first punt return for a TD. Will he get involved on offense?

"Grossman tells me, 'You're in the wrong spot,'" Hester said. "I wouldn't mind. I'm a team player."

Smith and Grossman both said they were comfortable with the current crop of receivers, but what else could they say?

"Obviously, there's a little concern they're not all healthy and ready to go," Grossman admitted.

Asked about trying Hester at receiver, Smith said: "Ron Turner (offensive coordinator) and some offensive guys are in my ear about that. Initially the plan is to keep him on defense."

It sounds like he might. Why not? He's great in the open field with the ball.
