Look at the stellar defensive unit the Cubs trotted out in 2003, which was almost a trip to the World Series. I'd take the 2003 horribly defensive team over the 2006 decently defensive team.

Moises Alou=pathetic

Sammy Sosa= pathetic

Lofton=weenie arm

Aramis=error after error

Simon/Karros=need I say more?

Grudz/Walker=average

Gonzalez=slightly above average

Miller=good

Agreed with Sulley that defense is way, way down the list of importance of improvement areas.

I seem to remember Gonzalez dropping a routine DP in game 6 of the NLCS. Yeah, I guess defense isnt important.

Are you suggesting it's smart to construct a team based on the results of one play?

Hehe. I knew someone would fall into my trap.

Besides defensive errors, I'm sure I could also find some games that were lost due to a botched bunt, but that doesn't mean I'd make it a priority to acquire a lineup of bunting wizards.

Walker wasn't on the 2003 team.
Right. He was signed for 2004, mainly as insurance in case Grudzielanek didn't re-sign.

Wasn't Grudz already signed for 2004 when Walker was signed. It's my recollection that Walker was signed to play some second, first, third, and left. the Grudz got hurt and Walker became the starter. When Grudz returned, Walker was never given any playing time at the other positions.

Actually, I think you're right; I got it backwards. I think Grudz was re-signed because the Cubs didn't know at the time if they'd be able to sign Walker, and when they did sign him they'd already promised the starting 2B job to Grudz.

I don't think one had to do with the other. Grudz signed early. Walker didn't sign until July. It wasn't a case of not knowing if they could get Walker. Walker was just a bat that was available relatively cheap later on.

I think you meant January; I know he didn't sign during the season.

January 6, to be exact (I looked it up on baseball-reference.com). If he signed one day later, it would have been exactly one month after re-signing Grudz.

yes, and many feel that gonzalez was screwed out of the 2003 GG by a flashier renteria. look back and tell me who had the highest fielding percentage among qualifying NL shortstops in 2003 and get back to me, please.

as frostwyrm has made clear, you can't acquire someone on the basis that they'll make that one play if it comes up deep in the playoffs, all you can do is put someone out there who is competent and hope they make the easy plays.

besides, it has also been made clear that the playoffs are a crapshoot, absolutely anything can happen at any time. you can't put together a team built for playoff success, you must put together a team built for regular season success and hope they can get hot in the playoffs.
