It wasn't good, but looking at all the deals of the day, it was definitely a buyer's market. None of the sellers got anything close to top prospects for anyone.

What makes the trade so poor is Izturis' salary for next season.

 

If you received a prospect, even a mediocre one, there's little resources used from next season's payroll.

 

As it is now, there is going to be 4.5 million tied up in a palyer that will be a black hole in the line-up. The trade, more than anything, reinforces the idea that Hendry has no idea how to build a contending team.

 

I've typed this in some form four to five times today and I'll say it again.

 

As long as Hendry is in charge, the Cubs will not make the playoffs.

This trade was absolute, itchy pants.

 

It somehow made us worse for the next 3 years. I would have been happier with the Dodger system version of Augie Ojeda.

Like Vance said, the thing that makes the deal horrible what Izturis is owed next year. I would have been content with anybody owed less than $1 million next year. Obviously this was a seller's market and Maddux isn't a great pitcher anymore so we weren't going to get top prospects in return for him. But trading for somebody that is owed $4.5 million next year doesn't help the team be successful. This means that the Cubs will have almost $10 million wrapped up in Neifi Perez, Glendon Rusch, and Cesar Izturis next year.

His comments during the game sealed the deal -- we need to get better at pitching, and we need to catch the ball. He somehow forgot to add that they someday may need someone who can hit a ball.
