How this season can be salvaged for me:

Dusty gets canned in the next couple of days.

The new coaches are Gary Varsho, manager, the hitting and pitching coaches from Iowa and Sarge is the new bench coach. I have a soft spot for Sarge.

Over the next 21 days trades are made that resemble this:

Walker, Rusch and Neifi to the Mets for Floyd (expiring contract)

Maddux to the Brewers for a prospect

Dempster and Jones to the Yankees for prospects

Nevin for a prospect.

(If there's a market for Floyd and Pierre, they go to)

Rich Hill is named closer, Guzman takes Maddux's spot in the rotation.

Lineup:

Murton (the one that likes walking)

Barrett

Lee

ARAM

Floyd/Pagan

Pierre

Ronny

TheRiot

Rotation

Z

Prior

Marmol

Marshall

Guzman

Team plays just over .500 ball the rest of season. At least three of Marmol, Marshall, Hill and Guzman pan out enough to pencil them in the rotation.

We get a good enough idea from rehab what to do with Kerry in the offseason.

Pierre and Floyd both walk in the offseason.

Why is everyone so anxious to trade Jones? Sure, Hendry overpaid some, but Jones is on pace for the best season of his career and he's been basically the best player on the darn team! He just needs a platoon partner since he can't hit lefties.

I'd trade him if it made the Cubs better but I wouldn't move him just to move him.

Ummm...Sure. I have to admit you are creative.

Thats exactly why you do trade him. He's having the stats of his career, but is going to cool off. Trade now, while the value is high. He's way overpayed for a platoon quality player, and if there's a team out there that will give up value for him, trade him.

And replace him with whom? Be careful what you wish for.

Hill would likely need to show that he can have success against major league hitters before being considered for the closer's role.

You replace him with somebody good next year. It really doesn't matter who takes his place for the rest of this season.

Yeah, I hear Burnitz is going to be a FA.

Wow.

I read somewhere that Colorado was interested in Pierre. I bet he stays though.

What do they have to trade?

Don't know; prospect or two, I assume.

My master plan:

Can Dusty ASAP.

Give Niefi and Rusch their dough and tell them to pack their bags

Hire a manager who values walks and OBP.

Trade away Walker and Jones for prospects

Trade Pierre if you can

Sign Zito, Carlos Lee and Soriano this winter

Knowing Hendry, none of this will happen, and we will suck in 2007.

story about Carlos Lee

I was at theCubs Brewers game friday night and sat 2 rows from LF. there was a little girl and mom behind us with a sign that read "I love You Carlos!!! Come back to Chicago!!" They were wearing Cubs shirts. He saw the sign, us all sitting there and gave the girl a big smile, wave, and wink....

I'm not sure I would really want him though...maybe to a reasonable contract...

My dream scenario:

Trade Marshall and Hill for Crawford.

Trade Ramirez, Pie, and Cash for Cabrera.

Trade Pierre to White Sox for OF/Pitching Prospects.

Trade Maddux to Dodgers for pitching/OF prospects.

Trade Jones to Yankees for Pitching Prospects.

Sign Schmidt, Milton Bradley, Doug Davis/Ted Lilly

Re-Sign Walker

Start year with lineup of:

Crawford

Walker

Lee

Cabrera

Bradley

Barrett

Murton

Cedeno

Zambrano

Schmidt

Prior

Davis/Lilly

Marmol

And their payroll would still be under 90 million, and only two position players would be over 30.

But, of course, its based on semi-unrealistic trade scenarios. But this is a "dream scenario", right?

Gotta have a better plan that just "somebody good." Off the top of my head, I don't know what RFers are free agents after this year. But it'd be stupid to trade Jones if there aren't any better FA's available.
